I've been lurking around this thread the last week or so as we've past the trade deadline. Overall I'm in agreement for the most part with the frutrastion with what's happened in the past. This team always seem to want to be down right average and it's aggravating. Unfortunately we can't go back to last year and make bigger additions like everyone seemed to agree we should have besides management. However I'm surpised to see people this disapointed in the results at this deadline. Yes there were probably trades where we should've/could've gotten more value but at the end of the day we weren't left holding the bag with older players. Standing pat would've been the worst thing we could've done. Sell off these guys as we did and try to get as much value as possible, then hope someone in mangement finally realizes to win the league you need to go chips in and not be half hearted.
Here is my analysis of the trades around deadline time. Let me know what you think.
Frasca deal - This might have been the best one of the bunch value wise imo. I thought getting a 2,3,4 for an OA who's struggled a little bit with the inhury bug this year was good. I'd give it an A.
Punnett deal - This one I thought they'd get better value on and slightly better assets than the Frasca deal. Anyways at least they got something of value for him in the 3,6 picks. It's tricky trading OA players at times. I'd give it a B-.
Thornton deal - I'd first I was shocked the only thing coming back was a 15 but I think he's still hurt for some time. Seemed like goalie positions were set with the contenders. Kinda a no move with this one. I'd give it an incomplete as if he's hurt it's impossible to get much for him.
Sale/Savard deal - This was the big one and I seem to be the minority here, one I'm glad they made. They got a couple of '05 players back, however neither really seem to have high potiental. The picks were the prize here. Wish there would've been another 2 attached but to get a 2,3,3,4,4,4,5,5 isn't the worst for asset management. If Sale does in fact go to the AHL next year I think this return is servicable. I'll give it a B.
Moore deal - I don't hate this at all. Once you start to get to the middle rounds the chances of the player ever playing in Barrie is pretty slim. I'd take my chances on a guy who has a very high ceiling even if the odds are he isn't coming. I'll give it a B.
Overall happy with the selling off direction of the team instead of staying put. Value wasn't great but wasn't horrible either. I felt like they could've traded Jelsma to get even more pieces and fully commit to the '06/07 group to be the winning group.
