Barracuda News & Discussion VII

A few more notes on this game specifically that get lost with the Gushchin performance:

-First star of the game was actually Alexander Holtz of Henderson, who scored four goals in this one. We had no answer for him.

-Andrew Poturalski finished with five points on the night (1G 4A). So that's seven points on the weekend, he now has seven more points than second place in the AHL (Texas's Matej Blumel).

-Along with the GWG, Cardwell had two assists, so three points for him. Luca Cagnoni also had three points, all assists.

Overall this weekend:

I know Romanov just came back from injury, but he better get himself back in gear, because Gabriel Carriere is looking better and better. Romanov returned tonight for this one and frankly wasn't very good, IMO. If Askarov's still going to be out, Carriere is my most trusted guy right now.

Braden Hache has actually improved quite a bit. He's filling the role of big physical bottom-pairing defenseman pretty well. Which is good, because we're thin at that position since Muk and Thompson aren't here anymore.

PK went 0 for 3 today, but I'm not really all that concerned by that. Both their first two goals happened because Romanov couldn't get over quick enough after a bad bounce.

Overall, great weekend for us, we made things a little too interesting today. Next up... ugh. San Diego, of course.

Getting secondary assists on the PP are not all created equal and are more a measure of PP time and usage than pure skill. It’s why I’m not that impressed with the points put up by Lane Hutson. I want Cagnoni to succeed. I just don’t think that would fit long term with the Sharks. He should be running the PP to maximize his value and hopefully a Schaefer or equivalent #1 D is running the PP and not an undersized 3rd pairing PP specialist.

The Pacific standings have gotten interesting over the last couple weeks, in no small part because Calgary has fallen off a cliff. They've only won one game out of their last ten and are now one point behind Colorado, who has three games in hand on top of that. The top four are only separated by two points.

The Barracuda are then just four points behind that group, and six points out of first place.

We've got San Diego tomorrow, and then a big two-game series against Abbotsford (the team right behind us) this weekend. Not much season left- just 19 regular season games remain for the Barracuda.

Duehr (who now IS wearing #55), 1-0 Cuda.

End of the first period. Encouraging start, we aren't falling into San Diego's usual trap thus far. Quiet game 5 on 5. Shots are 11-7 SJ, but a lot of our shots came during a 4-minute double minor toward the end of the period.

Meanwhile I just took a look at other scores around the league and the Wranglers are currently down 8-1 against Coachella Valley after two periods. What in the world happened to that team.

Tbh, I thought we played fine for most of this one, but we just couldn’t put them away. We did better against them today than we usually do.
Sharks have sucked a fair amount of the Barracuda's best players away from them this year. Current roster is really not that great on the whole.

Kinda forgot to mention: Dunno what Cagnoni was doing on the OT goal. That was a head-scratcher.

It isn't that great on the whole? Compared to what?

Defense is a little bit depleted with Schuldt having his Sharks cup of coffee, but I'm not really sure where there's an argument that this roster isn't good. We even just casually added another PPG forward (Duehr) tonight.
