Barkov spears Letang in the nuts called for major - after review the NHL/refs reduce call to minor Slashing penalty (mod edit)

You're clearly not familiar with Barkov's play style and his penchant for stick lifts. In the replay, you can see the blade of Barkov's stick hit Letang's right forearm, so Barkov nearly pulled off the stick lift. Barkov didn't just wake up and decide to do nutchecks, but since you clearly believe that, I don't know what else to tell you.

Florida color guy is good. I wonder when the Florida play-by-play guy’s LeTesticles are going to descend.

You indicated that a testicle rupture was a significant risk on this play, and I was saying that it wasn’t.

It wasn’t meant to be me saying that this type of play should be allowed, just that your hyperbole has gone to extreme.

I never said it was a significant risk, you said that. But there is a risk. I just think any violence directed at someones nuts should punished more heavily than a routine hook.

Barkov instigated this "stick lift" when the puck was half the way out of the zone. And regardless of his character or not he is responsible for his stick just like with a high stick for example. Intent or not, thats a 5 minute major every day of the week. This thread is not about Barkov being evil or dirty. Its about the league and refs failing to enforce the rules properly.

I mean, that's not spearing.

Why not? Its an uplifting motion that ends in Letangs nuts. Its can definitely be seen as a poke just as easily as a slash. But even if it would be a slash it should be a 5 minute game misconduct because its dangerous. Just have control over your stick and not lift it in someones nuts 3 seconds late and you will be fine!

Rule 635 | Spearing

(Note) Spearing is the act of poking, stabbing, or attempting to poke or stab an opponent with the tip of the blade of the stick while holding the stick with one or both hands.
(a) A major plus a game misconduct penalty shall be assessed for spearing an opponent.
(b) A match penalty for reckless endangerment may also be assessed for spearing.

Just remember that the NHL called this Ovechkin attack a mere 2 minute for slashing and you should understand that the NHL is failing horrible enforcing the rules. Of course the Ovi incident was way worse and clearly deliberate. Game misconduct + 5 game suspension for Ovi and game misconduct + 1 game suspension for Barkov would have been proper ruling.

well they reinvented what an elbow was last year, why not reinvent spearing this year?

thats a scumbag move, but it aint a spear. thats just a classic hows she goin

I apologize that you turned my statement into a 👨‍🌾.

You're clearly missing the main point of what makes a spear, a spear. It's not spearing because he uses the shaft, and not the blade. Hitting someone with the blade of your stick is much more flagrant, and that's why there's seperate penalties for slashing and spearing.

If you want to argue it should be a 5minute major for cupping, stick to that.

After reviewing the footage starting with 02:13 I agree that he does not hit him in the nuts with the blade, but probably the shaft. Secondly after watching that replay 10 times I have no idea what Barkov is doing, other than being frustrated and just whipping his stick anywhere he likes. Previously I said a 5 + game misconduct would be enough. Upon further review I would make that a 2 game suspension, especially since he only got 2 in the game, it was really reckless.

Thanks for pointing out the main principal of contact though, that was very clearly seen on last replay which was the one I had watched the least of. Very rare to see the shaft being the main point of contact btw.

I'd like to think that, this year, 3 or 4 Bruins team-mates would be in on top of Ovechkin straight away after that.

They let way too much stuff slide under Cassidy.

Well, if the refs had ejected Ovi from the game at least the Bruins would have had something to show for being soft! But when the refs refuse to call the rules maybe Boston have slashed Ovies wrist with a full flex swing? Would not have been more than 2 minutes, right? When you let stuff like that slide you lose all credibility and hand the power to the players!

Can’t really argue with this logic as a b’s fan. Someone should’ve shoveled that fat punks bag into the rafters that night, unfortunately they were playing with Cassidy’s coin purse instead.

Because you can't spear or poke with the shaft of a stick, how hard is this to comprehend?
