Since this incident was called a 5 minute major for spearing, and then changed to 2 minutes for slashing after review, the NHL have now officially changed the punishment for spearing to 2 minutes! Meaning spearing someone in the nuts is the same penalty as tripping someone by accident or hooking an opponent.

This is an obvious farce and also a danger to players safety - which the NHL time after time shows they could care less about.

The NHL also fails to understand that the reason why spearings are a 5 minute major is that we want to prevent repeated incidents when people use the stick as a weapon in that manner! Saying "oh this time nobody got hurt" opens the door for more players to repeat such dangerous going forward. Same goes with pointed attacks against other players nuts.

It started with Ovechkin spearing Fredrick in the stomach and getting 2 minutes for slashing and then its escalated to the point where spearing is no longer a penalty.

Footnote: Even if you call it a slash, a deliberate slash to the nuts must result in a 5 minute major + game misconduct! The refs who reviewed this should be warned, suspended and re-trained because they are not fit to their jobs!

And yes, Barkov got the super star treatment of course! What can we expect from the league? A 5000K fine? Or nothing at all?

They don't care about protecting players. An intentional stick to the groin should be an ejection every single time, it has no place in the game whatsoever. Yet so many times I've seen refs watch something like that yet call nothing at all. Which is why I don't really care when a Wideman incident happens. You make a living letting guys get away with intent to injure? You reap what you sow.

if you want to open the technicalities book, you gotta open it all the way. spearing is as the word implies, using the tip of the stick to jab. that's not a spear, that's a slash and it wasn't bad enough to warrant a major.

it's a rat play but it was fairly penalized and will probably be fined, move on

I think the logic here is correct, but the NHL would be wise to not set a precedent for nut taps earning only a minor. I could see a fine for Barkov, perhaps.

You do know that "spearing" is hitting someone with the toe of the stick, right

Is the rule spearing different depending on which country you are in? I am former ref in sweden. And in the swedish rule book this is how spearing is defined:

Rule 62 - "Spearing shall be assessed to a player who uses his stick blade to jab a player with the sharp edge of his blade."

Its also stated clearly that Barkov should have received more punishment than 2 minutes even his attempt did not make contact with Letang! Much like a player should receive a game miscount for "kicking" even if the player does not connect with the other player!

With all the dirty shit Crosby has gotten away with in the yam bag region…you aren’t going to find much sympathy from around the league

This is not about gaining sympathy its about the league and refs not enforcing the rules and not caring about players safety. The Crosby incident should also been a 5 minute major btw.

You're wrong. The spirit of the rule is always more important than the letter of the law.

(Note) Spearing is the act of poking, stabbing, or attempting to poke or stab an opponent with the tip of the blade of the stick while holding the stick with one or both hands. (a) A major plus a game misconduct penalty shall be assessed for spearing an opponent.

I would say you could call that poking just as you call it slashing. But the bottom line is every time you put your stick in somebodys nuts it should be viewed as intent to injury and given 5 + game misconduct, anything else is insanity because there is risk for nut-injury. In this case it should be even a more no brainer since Barkov is doing it in retaliation and not by accident to a player he has not beef with.

I find it baffling anyone thinking a 2 minute minor is fairly penalizing someone attacking the nuts of another player in anger! If he had gotten 2 + 10 for misconduct I could maybe considered that to be ok, but still lenient. But penalizing it the same as a in incidental slash to the stick or hand of someone having the puck is obviously not right in any sense or form!

Whats obvious is that Barkov wants to retaliate and is angry, and he know Letangs nuts are there, go figure!

You can totally argue that it’s a cheap shot and should get 5, but that’s definitely not spearing.

It's not spearing. Spearing is defined in the rulebook as
62.1 Spearing - Spearing shall mean stabbing an opponent with the point
of the stick blade, whether contact is made or not.

Barkov didn't stab his stick blade. It was a very clear swinging up/down motion which is, by definition, slashing.
61.1 Slashing - Slashing is the act of a player swinging his stick at an opponent, whether contact is made or not.

I think we should also stop using non-NHL rulebooks to try to interpret what should have been called on the ice. That's dumb as shit. Use the NHL rulebook. What the Swedish rulebook says is entirely irrelevant here.

Swinging your stick up at a player isn't usually a penalty unless it hits their face (high-sticking) or arms (sometimes called as hooking)

And what the rulebook explicitly says does not matter. This is not a legal document. What is more important is the spirit of the rules. There are a variety of illegal acts that are not explicitly forbidden by the rulebook.

I am sure you would be unaffected if you had ruptured testicle, tough guy!

If protecting the players safety is dramatic, then so be it! I dont think its dramatic at all, just common sense.

You do realize hockey players wear cups, right?

You do realize hockey players have been injured despite that, right?

What was your point btw? That we should allow attacks to the nuts because players wear cups?
You indicated that a testicle rupture was a significant risk on this play, and I was saying that it wasn’t.

It wasn’t meant to be me saying that this type of play should be allowed, just that your hyperbole has gone to extreme.

This is Letangs fault. The way he was speading his legs, gave Barkov no other option than to hit. It was a reflex
