Barkov shutdown style slightly overrated?

I get he's a phenom of a player, but when I look at his stats this playoff as being this "shut down guy", I'm not seeing it. It's no shot at the guy, but I'm genuinely interested in hearing what makes him this phenom of a shutdown guy. His +- isn't that good and at 17 points you would hope it to be better? Once again, not a shot at the guy, just looking for input.

I mean all i'm saying is when someones narrative is being a "shut down guy", which i'm not saying barkov isn't. Outside of the playoffs he is top 5, however inside the playoffs he is -2 carreer average and at a 0+- rn. Like I said I only watched the NYR series, so can't say anything else on the other series.

The Florida fans who think he has magical properties and is going to be able to shut down the two highest PPG playoff performers in the history of the NHL other than Gretzky and Lemieux are pretty funny.
I think you’re misrepresenting what said FL fans are saying. No one is saying “shut down” as in “total blanks on the scoresheet”. Only that they can slow them down enough to where they don’t dominate the series. McDavid is going to score, the question is, how often?

There are so many things that will never show up on a stat sheet. Not trying to be a smart ass with my first reply. Even watching on tv doesn’t do full justice to his impact.

I admit I am unfairly focusing on that guy who said Barkov > McDavid and Oilers fans are going to understand the legend of Barkov

That's magical thinking lol

Remind us how many total cups and total years played between The Great One, and Super Mario?

Even the best players don't win it all every time. A good source of context would be the 8 or 9 years McDrai have played without even making the finals, let alone winning them.

No one shuts down the best guys completely, but it is also far from a slam dunk they win it all, just because they are top players/producers.

This is the hardest trophy in sports to win, and the best complete team will do it. Let the series play out.

It's not McDavid vs Barkov, winner take all, no matter how confident that matchup does or doesn't make you/us.

I think as long as skinner plays decent, this series will be crazy good regardless. If skinner pulls some stinkers then it's going to be a hard game to win.

Seems like a very strange time to question Barkov, or to point to his points while questioning his shutdown ability. None of the big lines Florida has faced - Kucherov's, Pastrnak's, or Panarin's - have done much of anything to damage them. Barkov is very smart defensively, very strong and dominating in puck battles, and does a great job keeping control of the puck. McDavid vs Barkov is the most interesting matchup of the playoffs.

Straw man argument. I never even said the Oilers would win.

You got upset by a single poster, and now with context don't like the answer to the question you asked, maybe Barkov gets lit up, but no one said he was magic or infallible. It's obvious how you think it will go, maybe you will be right. Maybe not. That's why they don't determine the winner on paper.

Get out of your feels, and enjoy the series.

He’s an incredible player. As an Oilers fan I’ll be very curious to see if he can handle the big guns.
Panthers fans, if he’s on McDavid who gets Draisaitls line?

I’m not saying he WILL, but defensive players have stayed on and fairly well controlled McDavid over a series before haven’t they?

Depends, I’d probably consider putting the Lundell line on Draisaitl. He and Lustorainen are really solid defensively and Lundell in particular has been one of our standouts on this playoff run.

Or they could put the Bennett line on McDavid and put Barkov on Draisaitl which I think would be a mistake

Good question. I wonder if Florida just tries to put out their 2nd line(Tkachuk/CV) and just try to get the forecheck going and keep Leon on the defensive side for most of his shifts.

Maybe split up Barkov with the Forsling pairing more often so at least one of Barkov or Forsling is out there vs McDavid or LD?
