Barkov contract

The Wild just gave Kaprizov 9m aav. I think my dream of getting Barkov being 10 like how the Lightning have managed with their stars is pretty much dead.

Hard to say really. I bet Zito is trying to sell Barkov and his agent on the Tampa model of taking a discount to keep the team around him competitive. That's where Dubas failed in Toronto and just got all his friends big deals.

TBL deals with their stars are (relatively) old and they already had a pedigree as a contender and amazing development program which can certainly factor into the equation for someone committing long term.

I don't see barkov accepting less than 10.5 aav

Alternative theory: Barkov wants to figure out how much money Lundell will need ;)

In all seriousness, I think Barky might want to play out the first few months of the season and make sure another 2016-2017 doesn't happen before signing a home-town discount

Which is fair. He may also want to drive up his value with a solid start to the season.

A month on top of an eight year NHL career doesn't really have any significance to the contract negotiations. He'll still get paid top dollar even if he went like 2pts for the first 10 games.

So if he’s not signed before the start of the season how nervous will everyone be?

Start of last year, 50/50%
End of last year, 65/35%
Now, closer to 85/15% he stays.

Don't care about the AAV, but curious/a tad worried about term.
He could easily go 4-5yrs here and still cash in again when ~31years old.

The cap going up eventually, giving FLA a solid 12-13 years here, we can't blame him if he does want to eventually play elsewhere, but for now, he clearly wants to be here and why wouldn't he? Management has done everything to surround him with talent.

Nah that was already reported weeks ago. What is probably going on is the most likely scenario, Zito is nickel and diming and Barkov's agent is trying to juice the hell out of the Selke win. In the end it'll get done but they could have made this a hell of a lot more expedient. Both sides should have been more serious about negotiating earlier.

And with the Hubi extension upcoming and the small Cap raise. Next Season a lot of our Younger player must take over position from veteran Player. So they can hold the Cap with the full roster.

On a scale of 1-10? zero.

I don't know much about Barkov personally, but I'm pretty sure he isn't stupid. He has the best possible set up here with this team and has no ties to any other team. So he'll want to stay.

I also don't know Zito or Viola personally, but I'm also pretty sure they aren't stupid. Barkov gives them the best chance to win and there is no way to recover the lost value if he's gone.

The real question marks are term and AAV. Term is interesting because of the cap, I could see Barkov going for 4-5 years and still aim for a good contract when he's in early-30's. Or maybe the team is trying to offer 4-5 years at a slightly lower AAV ($9M) to help the window and trying to convince Barky the cap will rise in the future. Who knows...but I am certain it'll get done.

Trade him

The only thing worse than losing him would be losing him for nothing. I would think the trade market would have been explored by now if they thought there was a chance he could walk.

I would 100% be trading him now if he doesn’t want to sign an extension or it just doesn’t get agreed upon for whatever reason.

to sign a player of this level, you need to pay money ... Barky wants to play here and wants the longest possible contract (8 years) ... you just need to pay money adequate to his level (11 mil) ... but you can agree with Barky about 10.2- 10.5 ... less would be very stupid for Barky.. and very indecent and stupid for the team and Zito!

Pretty nervous, not gonna lie. We are talking about the Florida Panthers after all there is far too much hope and optimism right now. It seems like we would be due for something to shatter our dreams.

I mean, probably a 5 out of 10 on the worry scale.

Can feel better about the direction under Zito, but sometimes players know this is their chance to play where they want to and there's nothing really the team can do.

Hopefully, Barkov wants to really stay here and it's just a few loose ends at this point contract wise.

Not that simple. If you're a super star player right now, you may not want an 8 year contract that locks you in at a lower AAV than what you could get when the cap goes up. We've also seen with other teams (i.e. leafs), paying the absolute top dollar means the team is less able to field a competitive team - if your captain squeezes the team for every dollar, you can bet everybody else will want to as well and the opposite is also true if the captain and leader of your team took slightly less.

Based strictly on performance, Barkov deserves an $11M contract and I would not hold it against him, but it's not debatable that a lower AAV would help the team win. So he has to decide what his priority is, getting paid 10% more or having a better chance to win.

You have to feel somewhat nervous. If you say you have “zero concerns”, you’re lying to yourself.

Having said that, I’m confident in Zito. He’ll get something done.

I think it's more likely he signs, but I'm not sure. I also am optimistic we could do an Islanders post-Tavares if need be.

I can honestly say I have zero concerns that he doesn’t sign here long-term. I’m more concerned what the figure will be and how it could effect our cap space moving forward.

As Ghoste said, I have zero concerns that he'll sign here. I'm more concerned about term and AAV. Where else would Barkov go? Why would he go somewhere else for another $1-2M a season? And if he played hardball, why would Zito let him walk for $1-2M? If there was even the possibility that he walks, why haven't there been any trade talk rumors?

Barky is, I believe, fully invested in the Panthers. Nothing he has said would indicate any different.

Throughout his career, he has never been in this position with this Organization, with what is generally viewed as a legitimate chance to achieve the ultimate goal. The Org's commitment to that goal is clear. Options for him to find his payday will always be there, but the options to get that and to win it all too; will be harder to find.

In the end and in my view, his new deal will be fair in AAV but shorter in term; to give some flexibility to both sides. If so that sounds like a "win-win."

Get it done!! :thumbu: :stanley:
