One of the (very few) downsides to owning a condo is that, in most cases, BBQing is a no-no. Can't have one on my balcony, since there's another balcony directly above me.

My building has a communal, propane BBQ, but it's just not the same. Doesn't get used a whole lot, either. :dunno:

There are a few exceptions to the rule.....I'm assuming people on the top floor can BBQ at will. Also anyone with a garden unit, which has a patio and not a balcony.

I like the old charcoal style for flavor, but you have to wait 50 minutes for the coals to heat up. Open to suggestions as I see a plethora of new style grills out there, kobodas, smokers, hibachi, Traeger pellet grill is amazing apparently, weber, etc. so many to choose from, but who has the time to try them all.

I have a natural gas grill, (connected to my house gas line) no trips to the propane fill station. But I have a old style charcoal for days when I have time to baby-sit the grill.

I also have a traeger pellet smoker. It can be used for grilling as well but I use it for smoking meat specifically. I also have a Weber smokey mountain smoker that I use when I want to make it a whole day event smoking something big.

Because of living in barracks and now living in a small apartment complex I can only really use a propane grill. It's just a little one but it does it's job well. Just made myself a few grilled chicken thighs.

We need a smoking meats thread. I plan on smoking some stuff over the weekend.

This... I've done very little smoking so far (although I did some great pork ribs a couple of times). Summer is coming, and I'd like to get a little more adventurous, and learn to smoke other things.

Here are my BBQ grill theory's

gas grills are good if you like to grill a lot even if it's just by yourself or for you and your gf/mom/dad w/e. easy to clean and you don't have to wait a long time for the grill to get hot. in my experience the problems with gas grills come when you have bigger party's and less room to operate so you constantly have to be moving **** around because those flames will pop up that's why i like them better for smaller groups personally

charcoal is good imo for like weekend get togethers where you are not rushing to get food ready, people are just relaxing having a good time, drinking beer etc. plus if you can keep the direct heat to one area after you get a little char you can pull off the direct heat, cover and not have to constantly watch it. plus charcoal grills are easier to move around if you want to take it somewhere. charcoal style also is much better flavor wise because you can also use wood

really it's just personal preference in a perfect world i would have both

oh yeah and if you go charcoal say no to lighter fluid, just buy fire starter instead it works way better and you wont get any nasty lighter fluid taste

Charcoal.

Get a charcoal starter instead of lighter fluid, you put papers in the bottom and light it up. Paper bags work the best. Takes twenty minutes at the most to get the coals going, you dump them in the grill and you're good to go.

Was coming here to post about these things. Got one two years ago after a lifetime of charcoal grilling and have no idea how we lived without it. Pretty inexpensive too.
