New York City
Ok so we all know hockey is #4 in this town, but we also know winners are also always #1 here too. The Rangers have pretty much been invisible in the media & streets in general up to now, but there's gonna come a point where the team just explodes in the city. After Saturday's win the Rangers article was buried as the 14th story down the sports section of the New York Times. After yesterday they're first on the sports page. Front page of the whole paper can't be far off.

Questions for the board:
  • Are you guys hearing more Rangers talk at the office /streets from (a) non-hockey fans (b) casual/non-sports fans?
  • Are you seeing more gear being worn on the streets?
  • Has anyone asked you how to score tickets to a game?
  • Has anyone asked you about who the players are?
  • Will this peak if/when we make the Stanley Cup Finals and the national media descends?

Not going to use the NYT Sports section as an Indicator.

DN and the Post have been giving the Rangers the Backpages for the past 2 weeks and will continue too until the playoffs are over. WFAN and ESPN have been taking Rangers too

I don't live in NY anymore but I remember back in '12 the Rangers had all these free street events in Manhattan and I've seen photos of it this year too.

I don't usually start watching until the end of the Reg Season anyway. Hard to watch games when the Knicks are on.

New Hockey fans, albeit casual is never a bad thing.

You don't need to talk about Bandwagon, we are talking about the best team in New York City, perhaps the most vibrant international city in the world.

The best teams in New York gets lots for free.

New York Rangers has been one of the most popular teams for many years now.

A vast majority of all players in the world wants to play for the New York Rangers, that's for sure.

You guys have a huge fan base and popularity.

It's nice if the performance start matching the market? ;-)

Rangers fever is starting to pick up where I live and work in Suffolk County. I see more Rangers shirts and hats being worn and everybody where I work is talking about them.

Went into my local King Kullen Saturday morning with my Kreider jersey on and about 10 people came up to me and said LGR, when are they playing...today...what time?

The issue is not the team's popularity but rather its visibility relative to other sports in a very crowded professional landscape in the city.

About this time back in 2012 the jerseys started popping up everywhere. Even heard a few guys in Bergen county admit they only watch the Rangers in the playoffs. After last night, come Thursday it should be in full swing.

Those are the fans that make most of us look bad to the other fanbases when they don't know their head from their ass but talk all the ****.

I wear my jersey to class/internship all the time and a surprisingly number of people yell "Let's Go Rangers" at me in downtown DC and on the metro.

It's been crazy here in Bay Ridge with the Rangers, and a Blackhawks bar on 3rd Ave, great to see so much hockey gear when walkin the streets. Reminds me of '94 when the weather was already pretty warm, wearing my Jersey almost every night.

My friend who's fave is usually a Nascar race came over and watched game 2 last night, introduced him to Hockey 4 years ago now he's hooked.

Got my first hat in ten years on birthday in March, wearing it around I get nods from lots of fans all of a sudden :D

The fact that tickets cost $500 and they're almost sold out tells it all for me...

lolwat

I have a playoff towel hanging up in my cube. I've also been wearing a t-shirt jersey to work underneath my button ups on game days.

Around the office more and more people have been coming up to me every day to talk Rangers.

Seeing shirts, jerseys, and hats around on campus. I have a Leetch jersey that, if I wore, I'm sure people would be saying "LGR!"

If the Rangers make it to the SCF, it'll get nuts around here, probably more so than in 1994. And it's all good with me. I don't mind bandwagon fans. It doesn't affect me in the slightest. I hope to see some Ranger hysteria real soon!

The reason I picked the times as an indicator is exactly because it's not a sports publication. When stuffy people at art galleries or brownstone open houses start talking about Henrik Lundqvist then you know the Rangers have climbed to the top of New York City ;)

The CEO of my firm just called me asking me when we're going to a game haha

to quote Ghostbusters:

"I'd call that a big yes"

The only reason I don't like it is that the demand for tickets skyrockets the price, and I probably won't be able to attend a game at MSG for the rest of the year :(

Other than that, I love it. Seeing gear being worn around town, or people talking to me in my office about hockey, or hearing it on the train/subway. Good times

I work at a Walmart on the Island (I know, it sucks, I'm still in college). Not only do I see more Rangers stuff now, but I get customers/vendors/coworkers commenting on my Rangers lanyard that I wear my badge on.

We're definitely getting there.

Have so many friends in school talking about them.

Hats and Shirts are coming out too.

Doesn't bother me, since a lot of them actually seem to understand the sport pretty well

I was in Windy City when the Hawks beat the Wild in OT to advance. There were a bunch of Ranger fans left over from game 7 but there were also a ton of Chicago fans.

So glad that place opened up, watched a few games this winter, none were Rangers games. Saw two Hawks games, so many fans from different boroughs come to watch their Hawks. Committed !

Definitely starting to see more Rangers paraphernalia on the streets.

Not really near '94 levels though, which is understandable considering that team was on a quest to break the curse. There were some really great storylines and defining moments in that run, such as Messier's guarantee and Matteau's 2OT goal, which caused that team to become endearing to the casual NY sports fan. The Rangers and the NHL's popularity was peaking and the lockout ruined the momentum.

My CEO has been asking people on the train if the Rangers won last night just so he has something to talk to me about in the morning. Definitely seeing more non-hockey fans in the office talking hockey and looking for tickets.

I do not think a run into the finals this year would get as much attention as 94. In 94, having both the Knicks and Rangers in the finals created such an amazing atmosphere. It drew basketball fans with no knowledge of hockey to the Rangers because they were both there at the Garden playing in the finals on back to back days. Today, I don't think Knicks or Nets fans are really jumping on the bandwagon because their teams are already home. You can argue that there is less media distraction with no Knicks/Nets run but just from a general NYC feel, we aren't there yet.

Does NBCSN Still Broadcast games 1-3 of the Finals?

If you really want the Casuals to watch, the games have to be on Free TV.

Craig Carton said this morning that he's going to the game on Thursday. I'd say that's a bandwagon red flag.

I have a few friends that are Ranger fans but are mostly hockey dormant during the regular season. Last night several of them were overloading Facebook with 'Best Team Ever' and 'Lundqvist really is the king' posts.
