With Brad Treliving's hiring all but official I fully expect there to be At least 1 trade between Toronto and Calgary.

One of the players from his old team that I hope he targets is Backlund.

Both ROR and David Kampf are upcoming UFA so Toronto has some holes in their bottom 6 specifically at center.

Backlund seems like a good fit.

Probably starts with Boston's 1st and then a little semi useful salary....say Timmins?

I want to re-sign Backlund and name him captain. It would take 2 2nd round picks or a late first for me to move him. Granted, if he doesn't want to do that it changes things. If we lose either of Lindholm or Backlund I think we are rebuilding. It's really hard to find centers who can win matchups against top centers. Backlund is a 50 point guy, but it's his defensive play we'd miss.

Flames don't have use for Timmins really.
Timmins is a huge question mark in himself. Kid has skill but can't stay healthy. Tanev has one year left and given his age/injury history, I don't see him resigning. Weegar is a right shot but prefers the left side. I don't really see that changing, so there is definitely a need. Very high risk with Timmins but looking at the rest of what the Leafs have, that would realistically be available for Backlund and he could be the best option.

Then the Flames shop their defensively elite, dominant possession centre to someone who has something better to offer than a oft injured defenceman who has managed to play 76 total games between 20-21 and now.

He's 34 years old. If we get a late 1st, plus moderate salary coming back in the form of a low risk/potential high reward young player.....we are doing well.

He hasn't shown any sign of slowing down.

Timmins is not anything the Flames need.

Trading him at the deadline, you would receive much more than that.

He’s a game changer 5 on 5 and arguably the best PKer in the league.

If he’s not re-signing a team like Carolina or Dallas would easily give a 23 first or a top prospect.

1st + B level prospect would be fair if Backlund still wants out.

But if the Flames are still stuck in a must compete now at any cost mentality, they'll probably do something dumb like Kerfoot and a 3rd and then sign Kerfoot to a terrible contract.

Backlund is awesome. He regularly gets top line ice time. He barely trailed Lindholm for top TOI. And he’s ridiculously effective at even strength and PKer.

You still pretty absurd when he gets labeled as a third liner or checking forward. Not saying the OP is doing it here but the guy is absolutely a top six forward with a really awesome and unique skill set who is aging like fine wine.

Every contender would drool to add him. So the price would be steep.

Canucks will outbid you

Unless it's a 1st in this year's draft + something else nice I just hang on to him and try to extend him. There's not many centers in this league that have the puck in the right end of the rink as much as Backs does.
I want to say Canucks 11th but it’s the just the age factor. What else can work?

Thing is he would be 3rd line here because they have Matthews and Tavares, that's not a slight on him that's just awesome depth.

He'd be a 3rd liner here like ROR was, in that we all knew he was to good for that, but that was the entire point to have a 3 headed monster.

I want that again except this time for a full season.

I'd trade 28+ for him.

I'd rather keep ROR so you don't have to do that but I'd do it.

He's a significantly better player than Tavares. He wins head to head matchups against virtually every center in the league. I've only really seen him get rolled by Crosby. The reason Edmonton beat us in 5 is because Dutter didn't hard match Backlund against the Draisaitl/McDavid line.

Given where the Canucks are in their development and where the Leafs are can they afford to do that?

They probably can but they shouldn't

11th OA is too much. He's worth a late first or 2 2nds now. He's worth more at the TDL. I just can't see us trading him if indeed the mandate is playoffs. You trade him or Lindholm and we aren't making the playoffs. I personally think we should be tearing it down, but the organization appears to be headed in a different direction.
