The best part of this are the Blues fans saying it shouldn't have even been a major or justifying what he did.

Can you point those out? Because I, and most other Blues fans in this thread, have pointed out that it was a bad hit.

has somebody offered yet that Alzner actually toepicked and boarded himself and that Backes had nothing to do with it?

how did Alzner put himself in a bad position? he skated straight toward the puck at a 90 degree angle to the boards. he stopped as not to skate thru the boards at which time backes face planted him into the glass.

Backes was directly on his 6 the entire time.

Alzner was cut by his helmet above the left eye when the boards pushed his helmet into his head and his skull didn't give.

Backes is not a dirty player, but I am not sure what he was thinking there.

you could start with those suggesting Alzner had a part to play in it and those that said it was no more than a minor penalty.

Backes may not be a dirty player, but that was a dirty play. It was not a good hit gone back because it never had a chance to be a good hit.

Okay, so a couple people said stuff like that. But that vast majority have acknowledged it was a bad hit. Or do you judge a fanbase on a the words of a few?

Even if Alzner toepicked, what part of slamming him from behind into the boards did Backes have nothing to do with?

Yeah bad hit by Backes. Probably get a game or two. Lol at the Backes hate, he plays physical but he's had what a couple questionable hits his entire career? Ohh yeah such a dirty player. This is the worst hit i have seen from him.

I don't think Backes is dirty, he does straddle the line from time to time though. My biggest problem is Backes is how fast he skates away if someone close to his size, but thinks he's the man if he goes ape **** on someone he's got 20lbs on.

I want to ask what Backes was thinking there but I think best answer is he wasn't. That was the definition of dumb.

Laughing at Blues fans that cried about Dustin Brown being dirty before he ever got a suspension now using the no suspension excuse to claim Backes isn't dirty. This looks like the last time you'll be able to use that excuse.

Laughing at your opportunism. Backes and Brown have played a style that has strayed into "dirty" territory at times in the past. They are not bad people. Does that comfort you? Would you prefer to eliminate the adjective "dirty" altogether? Brown and Backes are both uncouth!

Why don't you use the quote function to respond to those specific people then instead of making cheap observations? You know....add some substance to the discussion?!

What Backes was thinking? The only thing I can come up with is that he expected Alzner to turn prior to the hit and catch him on the side.

I'm biased as a Blues fan, but I thought 5 and a game was appropriate.

For fans who weren't watching the game, I think the context matters. This was a very physical game with several iffy hits preceding this, including a big hit by Orpik and one behind the net where Ovechkin left his feet to nail Pietrangelo. The refs were not calling anything. I'm not using that as justification, just that this game had a lot of 'truculence'.

based on the way these two caps v blues games went a scf between the two would be.....interesting. it might also be fun to watch the two teams play when the capitals are as rested as the blues. in a strange schedule twist the caps played the day before both games with st Louis while the blues were rested. meanwhile the caps lost both games he day before by 1-0 scores. odd.

Easily a 5 and a game, not sure HOW someone could argue anything less.

A suspension though? Eh that might be pushing it, the major and game misconduct should be sufficient.

Rested as the Blues? The Blues have played 3 games in 4 days and played down 2 men a majority of the game. Don't pull that non-sense

Bad hit and he should sit a couple games at least. Backes has to understand he is clearly stronger then some players and can't follow through so hard to where the other player can't put himself in at least a less vulnerable position. Alzner never had a chance.

I don't care enough to respond to every one of those posts, nor do I have the time. I summed it up in one post. It's quite common to respond to a general opinion in a thread than to respond to each individual poster. Don't take it so hard.

Blues fan here .... that should be a couple games for Backes. You can't always avoid hitting a guy from behind but you've gotta ease up if you can.
