Back to the drawing board for USA Hockey?

I think USA played as well as they could. I think Canada will have more room to recalibrate for the next Olympics and will be even better than they were here. It was the first best on best in a decade, after all. This was likely the better chance for the USA to win. However they were missing imo the only gamebreaking player they have on the level of McDavid, Mackinnon and Makar in Hughes. He makes a few gamebreaking plays and his team could win a one-off game in a short tournament.

When does the Canadian football team want to play our best NFL players? Can they take them to ot or beat them? He'll no. Our best athletes six feet and over for the most part don't dream of playing hockey. Hockey is like 4th or 5th in the popularity department in thr states for adults and minors. In Canada hockey is everything and their best players want to be hockey players. Kind of wild they split 1-1 with usa with an OT win and you are acting like they are worlds apart. Canada hasn't won a cup this millennium and the US markets are. If anything Canadiam hockey is losing the huge talent gal it had over tne rest of the world this millennium. If Canada sent their best basketball, American football, or baseball players to play a series it wouldn't even be competitive or close. Enjoy the win but the US is getting closer and closer to producing the same talent as Canada. It may even switch to us player where best Canadian players can now come play in universities allowing the us kids to player better talent earlier.

Well it's all kind of up for debate. Harder to judge guys who's careers are only half over or just getting started.

I think like much of the nhl the talent has tighten up.
 
The best Canadian players don't even want to play for Canadian nhl teams for the most part. They want to come to the USA for freedom , better tax situations , and a place where your dollar goes further. The only free agent Canadians teams have been signing are over aged players chasing their last contact like Tavares to trams foolish enough to pay them that much.

I'm not even mad. You guys split with thr usa in a secondary us sport in as Canada calls it our game. Play the USA and our game American football and see what happens. Hockey is an amazing sport but Canada isn't as dominate as it was at Hockey. They could only split a series and win in ot versus the US.

If USA barely won the first game then I cannot imagine how you describe the second game being decided in OT, an OT dominated by team USA.

Canada lost two games as well. The spin on narratives is missing the mark.

Matthews simply needs to play like an offensive superstar. McAvoy and Hughes need to be healthy. Tkachuk needs to not be selfish and waste two games benching himself.

These variables add up quickly.

Canada should worry about improving its goaltending pipeline. It will haunt them at some point.

I don't disagree that the narratives are lazy. That's the point I was trying to make too.

How did Canada lose two games as well? They beat Sweden, Finland and the US and lost to the US also, without Makar and Pietrangelo.

As for Matthews, I agree and like how you worded it. If he is an offensive superstar the US wins (and the Leafs would have won some series too), however it is not binary it is not "offensive superstar" or "terrible", there are lots of stops on the spectrum and he was closer to the former than the latter. He was fifth in the tournament in PPG and played a solid defensive game. He was better than fine and not a superstar...again the margins are narrow though. If Tkachuk scores then the US wins and Matthews finishes second in PPG, ahead of McDavid and McKinnon.
