Makar needs 5 goals to become first dman since Green 2008/2009 to score 30 goals. Not too many dmen in that club. Coffey (4) D Potvin (3) and Bobby Orr (5) accomplished it multiple times. Bourque, Housley, Hatcher and Doug Wilson were the others.

The cost to replace Kampf with slightly upgraded Kampf seems high to me. They needed a 3C and now they’re sitting a 4C to play a winger at 4C.
It's about flexibility. Having another capable C gives us options. I don't see Holmberg sticking on the second line, I could see Kampf supplanting him on the wing perhaps, again some options. You're going to need a functional fourth in the playoffs. I get the price of Laughton, but it is what it is now, im focused on options now and it's a bonus.

Surprised they would do that and make the trade look even worse. Why not play him with Tavares to get him jump started and gain some confidence? Nah, let's just keep running the same line combinations and hope this is the year they work in the playoffs.

I am at least encouraged that Berube doesn't make line combinations to make his GM look good, and that instead of promoting a guy who is playing like crap he's dropping him down until he finds his game.

Right now, I'm all for putting out the best possible lineup - which we can debate all day what that is - to help finish the season strong.

But point taken that Laughton's presence has done zero to positively alter the bottom 6.

Many ways to skin a cat but they need to get him going before the playoffs. Doubt they go far with Domi at #3C and Holmberg #2LW.

I think they need to let him find his feet here first. Leave him where he is for a bit and get use to the environment. I don't think constantly changing his linemates/role will do him any favours.
Maybe he's not finding his feet because he's focused on the additional responsibilities related to playing centre? I agree you don't want to keep moving him around, but if it means helping him settle in more quickly I think you need to consider it. Plus it gives us a different look on that line.

Lines

Knies Matthews Marner - 55.3% Goals For 422 minutes
Robertson Domi McMann 58.8% Goals for 194 minutes
Holmberg Tavares Nylander 66.7% Goals for 112 minutes

I mean... each of those lines has very solid results.

It just comes down to how you sort out the 4th line..... I'd be inclined to go with Lorentz Kampf Laughton.

True but if they want him playing center they don't have much choice but to give him a run on a lower line.

Because there is only 1 St. Patrick's Day?

I do love the look of them.
For sure - but people are out celebrating through the weekend and the build up to the day itself (at least where I live). Feels like an easy way to get some more sales, wear them a couple times.

I'm not too bothered haha - just wondering what to wear to the game tonight.

He cannot and MUST not make coaching decisions to assist anyone. Brads job is to try and fill in the pieces to improve to team to achieve an objective, once he manages the personnel it is on Berube to manage how they are employed on the ice.

Carlo and Laughton will find their groove, I'm not worried, they spent a lot of time in one place, with one system and team skillset. It will be easier for Carlo, he was a pick up I would make every day of the week. For a player like Laughton, not on my radar, who plays with energy and emotion; he needs time to find his groove and comfort. It's like being the new lead singer in a band, you want to be a bit of Mick Jagger but you have to be comfortable with your bandmates first.

Laughton getting his first fight under his belt is huge and Berube has coached him before and obviously knows what he brings or Brad would NOT have traded for him, guaranteed, so I'm not concerned at all. In fact, if the team is a well oiled machine, having talent dropped down to the 4th line is a positive outcome, in theory.

Put it this way, would we expect a Stanley Cup champion team to NOT have a strong lineup up and down?

When they interviewed McMann about "improvements for the team before the deadline", you could sense he was uncomfortable with the question, because his mind raced immediately probably to who might be moved, he knows Domi and Robertson would be prime for some trades. This was a great reaction in my opinion as I think he sees the team in a positive light and I hope that 3rd Line rolls as it was in December. At worst, it allows Berube some flexibility in knowing he can always throw them together at any point in the future even if he puts the lines in a blender for awhile.

The Leafs should be able to put together a nice little streak here, with the Rangers, Predators, Flyers and Sharks after this one. Could pretty much solidify first place with just that streak as Florida and Tampa have more difficult schedules over that stretch.

Doesn't Florida get a bit of a break coming up?
Leafs are playing a ton, 5 games from Saturday to Saturday and then head out West.
I think they are going to be gassed.

I thought we were done with the predictions?

Man, remember a couple of days ago when you said we'd win the next three in a row.. and then promptly lost to Florida AND Ottawa. Good times.

Nice jinx posting.
