  • Due to the increased volume of league transactions, the Trade Rumors and Free Agent Talk section is temporarily restricted to where threads may only be started by moderators and sponsors. We anticipate that this restriction will be lifted some time after the first round of the draft.
Couple things:

1) L'Heureux is the exact kind of player Bednar despises. This guy goes out of his way to be a physical pest who can cross the line. I give him a few weeks before Bednar can't put him in the press box or play him 4 minutes per game fast enough.

2) I'd get the young, fresh legs argument if we were moving an older guy. We aren't. We moved one of the few guys who actually still looked fresh vs Vegas.

I legitimately think the first point could go either way. I know a lot of people are comparing him to AJ Greer. I think of it more like a Kadri situation. L'Heurex's PIMs are out of control in the AHL, but in the NHL, he has only 84 PIMs in 87 games, and a huge amount of that is from fighting.

Take last season, for example. He had only 21 PIMs in 25gp. 15 of those were from a fight + a game misconduct. If you check the game log, he logged a penalty minute in only 4 games. Now compare that to a guy like Greer. His game log in his final season with Colorado is ridiculous. He took seven minor penalties in a 10-game stretch, while playing like 6 minutes per night. I feel that's the type of thing Bednar can't put up with; he's been able to handle guys that stay out of the box, but explode every 15-20 games.

For the second point, that's true, Colton and Drury didn't look like they were running on empty. But it was a foregone conclusion that they were getting moved, and the Avs easily could've gone the Kiviranta/Olofsson route again. They've smartly broken off some upside with these two. And between these moves and other guys we think are moving, Colorado should have an interesting collection of young forwards to keep the team looking spry. Not to mention, there's untapped potential here; we know exactly who Colton and Drury are.

Commenting purely to say you’ve given me a different perspective on the trade and I appreciate it. Good post.

I’d bet that there have been discussions between Bednar and Sakic about this team’s direction. Sakic is also Bednar’s direct superior now so there is that also. Bednar cant be ignoring GM’s input to the team anymore as Sakic seems to be way bigger authority than Cmac was.

As for 1), I'd put forth that the player only took a few minor penalties last season, though he played but a third of the season. In seasons prior, yes - he took a lot of penalties. Is that a sign of maturity or a flash in the pan? We shall see, I suppose. In general, I think people in here are overreacting to this particular issue.

2)? I agree in part. I've been quite vocal about the Avs needing younger legs next season (I think they're a season late in incorporating such). I would have preferred they traded a 30 year old Roy rather than a 26 year old Drury to get younger, but in the end, they did get some younger legs on the roster.
