Not sure if this was mentioned, he's from North Carolina. He was born in Raleigh when his dad, Andrei, played with Carolina. That may make immigration somewhat easier although I don't know the rules.
After all, they can't conscript American citizens, right?

There’s a reason why wolves were almost hunted to extinction, the elk and moose don’t even bugle anymore.

But they don’t get anything for calves, lamb, Makes up for that
Wyoming pays pretty much regardless (I’ve had first hand instances of cows freezing and clearly coyotes eating after death get paid). So did New Mexico for years (seems that has been under attack for the last couple years). Oregon was clamping down, read Montana has too.

I do my part in attempting to make them go re-extinct.

If he becomes an NHL regular, is that a success of the drafting department or more a case of a blind squirrel getting the occasional nut?

I sometimes can't remember if we blame the amateur scouts for every draft failure or just certain ones. :sarcasm:

Im tempted to say gay squirrel finding nut but im going to give them legit credit if Kovalenko becomes a player. I already give them shit for drafting guys like Mitchell Heard.

For now I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt and will point to it as a sign the drafting is getting better(Among other signs already IMO)...

But if we go another 3-4 years after this without any more success stories that narrative will and should change to a case of the blind squirrels.

Being an American citizen, I would think he could come back here quite easily, but it's Russia and I don't know his actual status back home. My post was inarticulate, but my reasons for saying I don't know is because of his status there, not because of his citizenship here.

Does it really count though if it's nepotism? Would be same if Taylor Makar beats the odds and makes it
Yeah this draft pick is 100% him having a recognisable name and nobody at the Avalanche draft table having a plan/caring/having expectations past the second round and just picking someone who sounds familiar. Given our track record it's not a bad direction.

It’s to the credit of nepotism and crafting the perfect plan to avoid the AHL.

Tho I guess nepotism won’t buy Stienburg a contract so maybe getting a draft pick signed is an org accomplishment

Makar was a nepotism selection considering he would have gone undrafted without the Avs intervening. Kovalenko wasn't, he was going to get drafted regardless of if it was the Avs or not.

The majority of Russian players do not want to play in the AHL, there isn't a "perfect plan to avoid the AHL." For Russians, why would they want to play in AHL when they can play back in their own culture and be closer to their families for a top team instead of a secondary city riding the coach in America?
