Here's the thing:

Makar burned an ELC year and then signed for 6 years.

That's no different than Matthews who played 3 seasons on his ELC and then signed for 5 years.

That's only 8 years of team control for a player that they drafted and it's shitty.

Yea the 8 years would be much more ideal. That Miro contract looks better now, you have to wonder if his "down" year played a role. The guy was a front runner for a Conn Smythe just a year ago.

In any case, the deal is not a home run but you can't compare Cale to anyone prior, he sets the new bar for defenseman contracts. And then in 6 yrs time with a few Norris trophys under his belt he is going to set the bar again.

Thing is, Phaneuf’s deal coming off his ELC actually ate up more cap% than Makar’s. It’s just that the cap itself is higher now.

I mean 8 years would be great if there wasn't a flat cap. Our cup window is the biggest in the next few years, so keeping that AAV down even by 500k is important, let alone around 2 million which he probably could've added to his deal if it was for 8 years.

And I don't like the comparisons. Heiskanen maybe somewhat, but Makar still blows him off the water. Makar is THE young D who sets the precedent of the contracts for his type of player.

Lol at all of you who thought it would be $10M+

It was always going to be $9M... Just like Landeskog is going to be 7X7 or 8X6.75

8 years is more than enough. The players deserve some freedom and not be stuck in a place they hate for all their career if they are unlucky enough to be drafted there.

It’s not optimal at all, but he’s still here for 6 years. They’ve got the next few years to make it worth it.

The Heiskanen deal also sucked for the Avs. Heiskanen isn’t better than Makar in any metric I’ve seen. His career PPG is literally freaking half. And he doesn’t have a Calder, and he didn’t just finish second in Norris trophy voting. Sadly, Dallas didn’t squeeze Heiskanen at all. Makar was justified in demanding 2-3 million more over 8 years IMO.

Sooooooo… what exactly is wrong with Makar getting $500k more?

Its the more $ combined with 2 less years that's disappointing. Go bridge 2-3 years at somewhat lower AVV or go full 8 years at ~1 mill more. These 6 year deals bringing players right to UFA is disappointing, especially considering the trouble we are seeing Joe re-signing Landy.

Sucks that he'll hit UFA 2 years before Heiskanen.
And Heiskanen already played one more season.

Dallas is guaranteed 11 years of Heiskanen and we're guaranteed 8 years of Makar.

Yea so all the attractive markets can have the good players and less attractive markets can suck forever. Got it.

So you'd rather f*** around with negotiations hoping you can somehow convince the player to go for an 8 year deal. Piss the the player and agent off because they don't want that kind of term unless you're willing to go way higher than you are comfortable paying. Banter back and forth risk another team coming in an making an RFA offer that you really don't want to match. All because you are worried about team control?

Or you could do what Sakic did got a franchise player a solid deal that the player is happy with, and now have him under control for the next 6 seasons with minimal angst. So that next time around the player isn't pissed at the team and just walks in UFA. We've been down this route before with O'Reilly, we pissed him off and never had a chance moving forward.

For those who say that was a failure by Sakic to only get 6 yrs always remember that there two parties in negotiations. Both sides need to agree on the contract. Yep even if the player is RFA. Shocker, right?

I don't understand the complaints, Cale could've easily gotten more on the open market, easily. Have a feeling when the cap fixes itself and Cale has a few more years under his belt that this is going to be a major steal for the Avs.

I don’t know why people are disappointed, it’s 2 less years than max and it’s under 10. Kid has basically walked into the league as a PPG defensmen.
Because arm-chair GMs always find some way to complain about things they have no deep understanding of. No way Cale wanted a 2-3 bridge and would end up singing an 8 yr deal. Had Sakic signed the bridge there'd be complaints too. Negotiations are about compromise. Cale compromised on term, and so did Sakic. Very solid deal.
