Avs Re Sign Blackwood to 5 Year × 5 25m Aav Deal

Blackwood has better save percentage than Oettinger this year
Steve Valiquette from MSG and Clear Sight Analytics has been on Real Kyper and Bourne (SN590) for a few months now saying DeSmith has been better than Oettinger this year by every measurable metric and it's not particularly close either.

Best segment on the show every Tuesday at 5 PM EST. I never miss it.

While I agree he hasn't been as strong as he was back a month or two ago, this isn't totally accurate.

The game before yesterday was a 2-1 loss to St. Louis, he stopped 25 of 27 and had a .926 sv %. The game before that was a 4-0 shutover over LAK, he stopped all 22. The one before that a 5-2 win over Detroit, he stopped 21 of 23 and had a .913 sv %..

So, no, it hasn't been several games in a row. :D

But yeah, I don't have the same blind confidence in him stopping every shot like I did before. He's getting beaten cleanly on some goals and is also giving up some ugly rebounds. Angles have also been off.

Like @The Kingslayer said, I fear Parkkila has gotten to him and is starting to f*** him.

Is it possible Parkkila isn't a great fit for larger goalies? Or should that not matter? Blackwood reminds me of Bishop. Can be inconsistent at times, but also amazing.

Would DeBoer start DeSmith over Otter in the POs?

Parkkila worked with Rask for years before he came to the NHL. He's 6'3" only an inch shorter than Blackwood. Also works with Varly for years. Varly and Wedgewood are 6'2".

After the Hawks game, Wedgewood went out of his way to credit Jussi for his success this year. Said he's helped him with short shuffles to keep his feet under him.

I'm no goaltending expert, I'll defer to RIAL and others for that, but to me it seems like Blackwood's issues right now are related to his confidence. The way he was so deep in his net on first Blues PP goal kind of shows that. Same with his body language recently.

What he's missing right now is the main thing that separated him from Georgiev. His ability to bail out the team and make the big save at the key time when they have a breakdown. That also seems related to confidence to me.

Hopefully he can have a mental reset after the regular season and get dialed in for the playoffs.

7th in league for Sv% out of goalies who've played 20+ games.
Ahead of him are: Hellebuyck, Stolarz, Vasilevsky, Kuemper, DeSmith, Gustavsson.

Fans from his previous team said that he has trouble when there aren't enough shots against him.

I admire the team's dedication to make him feel at home in net recently, but i would prefer BBW feel a little less comfortable and the Avs not play like ass in front of him.

I wish Gigantor still popped in now and then. I'd love to hear his thoughts on Blackwood

Watch Blackwood when he first arrived and watch him the last 3-4 games. Parkilla is f***ing this guy up.
Avs have allowed so many shots on the slot (especially on SH) and just infront of the goal.

Blues had Avs pants down behind the woodshed last game showing them what it means to have net front presence. Avs are just lazy defending and give so many high danger chances plus all the redirects.

Blackwood is solid when D does its job plus couple game saver like the left pad yesterday..

That could be one explanation. Another could be, he was riding a new team high when he joined and he has come down to earth a little bit since then. Another could be that players have ebbs and flows in their game and he might be ebbing right now. There are any number of rational explanations, I wouldn't jump to the conclusion that Parkilla is f***ing anything up. Wedgewood is doing fine with Parkilla.

I've held my tongue for two seasons now, but it's time to tell the emperor he has no clothes. Blackwood is getting a dose of Toews. I have never seen - in over 50 years of watching and playing hockey - a single player hanging his goalies out to dry as much as Toews does. In each of the first three goals in this last game, Toews' inability to perform tasks taught in pee-wee hockey cost Blackwood. This is nothing new; Toews is an equal-opportunity disappointer. He screwed Fourgiev and Annunen. Hell, he made the same dumb mistakes and cost Kuemper. This has been an issue since the first day he arrived.

Avs allowed a ton of shots on him and Wedgewood when they first arrived and they were stopping them. Blackwood hasnt been stopping them lately and hes letting in some absolute stinkers Fourgiev style. Im not blaming this on Blackwood. Im blaming this on Parkilla.

Wedgewood would also do fine under Dustin Shultz. Wedgewood just does his thing. Blackwood is a different guy. The pressure and Parkilla might be getting to him.

Curious why you think Parkkila is to blame?

I'm not saying I know whether he's at fault or not, but I don't think we saw Georgiev, Kuemper, or Grubauer do any better in SJ, Washington, or Seattle. Kuemper's playing well in LA this year though.

Prosvetov said so

Did he say something about Jussi I missed? He had nice things to say about him before.

“One of the best coaches in the league, for sure. Really experienced, if you see what he’s done with Georgie, with Kuemper, with all those guys, he brings them to the next level. I was just really fortunate to come here and have Jussi here.”

“Jussi keeps me in shape. He does a good job,” Prosvetov said following his fifth career NHL win. “Kind of doing those drills in practice, the game-like situations like the low drives and stuff like that. Probably 50% of the saves I made today we were doing in practice with Jussi. It’s makes it easier.”

I think Prosvetov might just not have been NHL caliber. He was worse in Arizona than Colorado.

He definitely wasn't. That one game against the Panthers where he and Georgiev were rancid and Bednar didn't even try and hold back his disgust was the end of the line for him.

Yeah, there was some interview not that long ago where he had some not-kind things to say about Parkkila and the Avs, but I can't remember the details.
