I don't get how signing a guy for basically the 14th highest AAV is a bad deal. That's going to be closer to 20th a year from now as a bunch of guys just below him are due for new deals. Saros, Ullmark, and Hill are definitely getting more, Demko is due an extension, there are others who could score a bigger deal. To sign Blackwood for what Daccord just got and what Kuemper gets sure seems like a good deal that could be a great deal if he solidifies his hold on the spot.
I think a lot of posters on this site fail to realize how much the cap has gone up in the past 10 years. The cap is set to go up to at least 92.4 mill near season. That puts his 5.2 million a year at only 5.7% of the total cap for next year. It was the same with Colton's contract. We signed him to almost the exact same cap percentage as Compher when he was our 3C. As the cap inflates, the numbers will just keep going up. I wish more outlets put an emphasis on the cap percentage of contracts, rather than the total money.

They are right it makes no sense from the outside. However from the inside it does make sense.
We are running low on assets, CMac didn't want to give up those assets and then have to trade for a new starting goalie this summer or fight with other teams for whoever the best UFA goalie is.
Our assets are precious...but yea, if Blackwood returns to his NJ form it could be the kiss of death for our window.
That's the most impactful gamble of the Sakic/CMac era IMO.

This is the Blackwood thread but I have to say after watching him and seeing how he is, I love him. He makes bad decisions at least once a game but he makes up for it by being our baby Foote.
I only worry that maybe we have no goalie coaching talent left. The 4giev experience is a bit concerning. Guy has a few obvious holes in his game, opponents figure them out and start scoring there nightly, and the coaching has no answers for it? What if that's what happens with MB, will they get him coached on the finer points so he can be consistent?

Blackwood has 220+ games of NHL play. There’s been MORE than enough tape on him to figure out if he has consistent issues.
For Georgiev though, he doesn’t really have a consistent place that he gets scored on. He just lacks it between the ears. It was never a technical issue with him.

Georgiev is the last goalie in the NHL who still remains standing on certain types of shots. This creates a whole new set of shooting areas
It's not about making a good goalie, it's about shoring up weaknesses so they don't get endlessly exploited. I think the between the ears problems came from him getting beat in the same areas as it would throw off his positioning after the goals went in. He would get beaten over the shoulder and then overcompensate and find himself out of position later.
A good goalie coach would clean that up but with all the turnover in the past for goalie coach it I don't know if that's something they have staffed well enough today. Regardless of the goalie the coach is working with, the concept is still the same for improvement.
What specific weakness was Parkkila supposed to shore up? Georgiev had a multitude of them but the biggest one was a rotten attitude and the mental fortitude of an egg someone left on the back porch for a week.

It's ugly, doesn't want to come back up quick enough, so you just kick it mostly until it's completely dead.
That is the only way to handle that situation..
