I still don't know how to feel about it, because it's so early. I guess we at least saw a few games of him on in an Avs uniform before signing him to a deal like Campbell, Husso or Korpisalo...

Could be a massive steal.

No chance it doesn't start with a 5. Imagine his agent will shoot for 6 and they'll land somewhere in the $5.25mil neighborhood on something like 4 years. Avs probably don't want to go too short or too long here.

Darn. A year off, almost called it.

What a great contract though, hopefully Nabokov challenges for the role in years 2-3 and they're forced to make a decision.

What an amazing Christmas present to the Blackwood family.

Short sample size, but I‘be preferred him to Keumper and given the time that has passed it’s a better contract in terms of % of cap.

Have to imagine this means Nabokov is on the block.

Blackwood was once the goalie of the future for NJ.

If he can be a competent #1, the Avs can be dangerous. If he goes back to how he looked for New Jersey his later years there, it will be a buyout worthy contract.

I like how he's looked so far. Hopeful the Avs have finally solved their goaltending for a few years.

Have to imagine this means Nabokov is on the block.

Why?

Nabokov will come over to be the #1 for the Eagles next season(2025-26). Wedgewood is signed for next season.

Following year(2026-27), Nabokov comes up to backup Blackwood on the Avs.

If Nabokov proves himself to be better than Blackwood, that's a great problem that the Avs will welcome.

The main board is a very angry place.

They are absolutely furious over this deal.

That would be a big mistake imo. As the Avs saw this year, lack of depth ends a window and goaltending may just finally be getting cleaned up after spending the most on it the past 5 years of probably any club.

Let Nabokov develop and compete for the spot. Best case he earns it while still on a sub $2m contract and our tandem is a bit expensive for 5 years.

Ok fine, ill like take that contract for a consistent Vezina candidate. He'll never win though, because if it weren't for the Avs D.
5.25M is not a lot for a #1 these days.

It's half of what the elite goalies make and less than what run-to-the-mill #1 goalies like Markstrom got a couple of years ago when the cap was lower.

It'll be interesting to see how it plays out. Quite a bit commitment to a mostly unproven goalie, who we've never seen in the playoffs. Hope his first few games here are a sign of things to come.

So one year in the AHL then 4 years behind Blackwood? I would imagine he burns a year off and is almost a UFA before 4 years have passed. Not saying he will automatically be moved, but our goalie landscape has completely flipped since we drafted him
