I think this could be a real option for Colorado. They're extremely low on trade ammo.

The OP suggested Girard+Wood, but Colton+Wood might make more sense for the Rangers. Not sure.

Much easier to fix than a 2C. You can wait til the tdl. You can trade Colton ++.

Girard is useless in the playoffs.

NYR receive Girard and Wood

AVS receive Zibanejad (no retention)

NYR find a way to get Zibby to waive his NMC. He might to play with Landy on a contender.

Avs get rid of charmin soft pmd Girard. They throw in a capdump in Miles Wood and get Zibby was came on strong late last season.

This is a high risk trade for the Avs who have no prospects/ picks and few assets to net a 2C. So they have to gamble as they don’t have the assets to trade for a better option. This also assumes Nelson walks which is likely. Zibby might be motivated to play with Landy.

For NYR its a fresh start. With Girard they have the option to trade KAM if his demands are high and recoup picks/prospects. The NYR are a soft team and Miles Wood may provide some bite on the 4th line or in the AHL…

You are just filling up New York's already clogged lineup with more drift wood and girbage.
Zibanejad is still a 2C minimum. 62 points in arguably his worst season as a Ranger. He's going to have a bounce back. The Rangers are better off reassessing in Nov Dec. This type of trade would really just be cutting ones nose to spite their face, but then sticking a Mr. Potato Head nose in the vacant nose spot.

50% is a dream, but that is rare to see that type of retention for more than a one year rental, so I am assuming its more like 10-20% and maybe with a third team helping. So yes, I think we need to assume massively different values if youre trading for a 32yo Zib at $4.25M or $6M or $8.5M.

Ill try for shits quick even though I have no interest in him on the Avs because he wont see PP1 time on the half wall since MacKinnon gets that and obviously Makar is the top guy.

- A lot more going on, but Id want to be paid for taking Zibs full contract and the Avs are trying to win now vs take on picks/prospects. Also needed some money going both ways to even it out. I assume Necas will be very welcomed in the deal, but want to improve our D as well here. Avs can likely get a lot more for an extended Necas elsewhere, but trying to make this work here with NYR.

- Similarish to the OP, but dont want to move Girard only to have Toews/Makar and nothing else back there. Girard is a perfect middle pairing guy so want another coming back there. Again, NYR is essentially paying us a bit to offload Zib and were gambling he is a 2C that will win now and then whatever after that with his contract.

Girard, Wood, Colton, and rights to Nelson and Drouin for Zib

- Youre right. $4.25M and I love Zib now, even at 37yo or whatever when it ends. So Colton is the toss in who is signed to a solid deal for 2 more years. I like to think Nelson and Drouin rights, NYR can easily get one or even both to sign on if they have exclusive talking rights now. Signs Nelson to 4-5x$whatever and give Drouin a 1-2 year deal and hope he is healthy and then give him a big deal after that. Maybe some value in the rights to them both or maybe not.
