Colorado is moving towards a cap reckoning and likely need to move a defender to help balance things out. While they do get some relief with Landeskog being out for the entire 2023/24 season the fact or the matter is as soon as this off-season they could have 5 defenders making north of $4m.

With Makar being untouchable, what are the best offers for any of their remaining defense:
- Toews (29, LHD, 1x$4.1m)
- Byram (21, LHD, RFA)
- Girard (25, LHD, 4x$5m)
- Manson (31, RHD, 3x$4.5m)

This thread is more of a way to attempt to see perceived value and address holes that will help both short to long term.

What is your teams best offer for any of these players?

I like Bryam but the Avs aren't trading anyone expect Girard from this list and as a Canucks fan we simply don't need that type of player.

Not necessarily true, I think the Avs would test the waters on what they could get for any of those players and if the return makes sense consider that offer. Obviously a player like Byram isn’t going to be a cheap ask, but he’s not off limits by any means.

I think with Byram's age and injury history, you're unlikely to get a return that makes more sense than keeping him.

Toews - Avs will not be able to afford to keep him next year. He has the most value, but this is mainly value to another contender (as his cap hit is WAY below his performance). So, return would be more likely to be futures. If we could make a hockey trade for a 2C, Avs should jump on that. Otherwise, probably better keeping him for one last good cup run.

Byram - injury risks make him a high risk/high reward pickup for another team. He is due his first RFA contract, will be interesting to see what he gets. For team, probably makes sense for a bridge. We'd probably have to sell relatively low on him, so makes zero sense to try to trade him.

Girard - despite perception (due to his size), he's a good player on a good contract in his peak years - so does have value. Has, shockingly, been one of the Avs most robust players over the past 2 years (Avs players take a LOT of injuries). Avs should not be trying to trade him, except if it is for a 2C with term.

Manson - was injured most of this season, no-one will be queueing up to take him this offseason. Avs would have to sweeten any deal to move him, which makes little sense.

I'm sure the Avs will be looking to retool/improve this offseason - hard to predict how, though....

Right now Byram value isn't good enough (due to injury) to get what Colorado need

Manson have value but Colorado need his playing style in playoff

Girard is on a pretty good contract 31 pts in 71 games and only 7 pts on PP so 31st in NHL for Even Strength point. I really think a team who need a good guy who can pass the puck in PP. If he play with Ottawa he got 50 pts due to more PP ice time (Chabot always injured)

Toews is an interesting case. If Colorado can't afford it an extension this summer he can be move.
A lot of players are in the same situation and a lot f team don't want to lose a guy for nothing.

The Jackets would be really interested in Toews, but I imagine the hope would be to get a #2C for him, and we'd probably be offering futures only. Very nice futures, but still futures.

Girard and Toews are the only realistic trade options here, Manson has a full NTC until 2024 and Byram is worth more to the Avs than what teams would be willing to trade for him given his injury history.

I imagine the general basis for any deal involving one these two, would be something around a 2C or a top-6 winger with 1st line potential.

I mean futures could be anything, they could even be a 2C!

In all seriousness, depending on the package of futures offered the Avs could always turn around and move some combination for a 2C. If there’s a good package available that makes sense it’s worth exploring imo.

Probably Girard.

He'd 3rd behind Makar and Byram for offensive ability, no ?

Fourth if you include Toews in there. Not necessarily a knock on Girard, I believe he was 31st in even strength production by a defender, but the Avs have a strongly offensively oriented defense core.

He makes sense to move, but if the value on the return isn’t there and a trade or Toews/Byram gets the Avs a massive haul it might be better to go that route

Something else to consider though, with the cap rumored to be making a sizable jump next year and Landeskog going on LTIR for '23-24 and possibly going on LTIRetired if he can't recover then the Avs may not be as cap-strapped as initially thought.

This is certainly a possibility and would allow for the Avs to stay the course (likely the route management would elect to go). However I think they would still consider exploring trade options to address holes in the team.

Manson's injuries make it tough... Otherwise I think he'd be a great fit for the Sabres middle pair and they could absorb his cap hit for the next 3 years.

Manson looks good on paper, and if only you guys had more key guys signed already (only 12 this coming season with $13 million space) I'd love to do a trade. We would need to move out cap though, primarily in wingers (Garland/ Boeser).
