Avalanche @ Devils - Rudolph Edition - 7:00 PM

No matter the record or talent, this team always manages to be stupid and embarrassing with a handful of very specific things every season. This year it’s getting shutout at the rate of a lottery team despite being a top rated offense overall. A couple of years ago giving up goals at the ends of periods seemed like a constant. Some of these issues last multiple seasons…they can’t score the first goal or win at home for shit going back to last season. We’re going on a dozen years of complete shootout ineptitude, which mercifully we haven’t been subjected to yet this season. And of course…being owned in every game against former devils goaltenders who are total scrubs against everyone else.

Maybe it’s Vitek Toronto will trade for tomorrow and he’ll get his first shutout since that one against the Canes late in the regular season in 2023. That will complete the list of active former Devils goalies who have shut us out just this year alone.

Are there any other former Devils goalies who are active to shut us out this year?

Where are Jon Gillies and Keith Kinkaid playing this year?

Fascinating isnt it. I think that is at least 4 times now this season we gave up first shot and a goal.

I can remember Allen doing it twice and Markstrom twice.... Maybe more even. Now not each time it's goalies fault but just the fact it happens so much this season.

This shutout thing is also mind boggling.

I just started using a smoker a few months ago and a pork tenderloin was my first attempt. Came out amazing and might be my favorite meat to smoke.
Could be the most enduring positive posted on this board tonight.

What BBQ sauce do you use?

Have given up on the cheapo Sweet Baby Rays. Stuck with it too long - had a short stint with Stubbs and now have moved into the Kinders brand because I like their seasonings a lot. Their smoked garlic seasoning is heavenly as is the buttery garlic (great on rice no kidding).

Getting shutout by Wedgewood is more embarrassing than getting shutout by Blackwood.

The Blackwood thing happened only once because he’s only had one decision against us.

Getting shutout by Wedgewood is one of the most embarrassing constants I can remember in this franchise.

At least blackwood can be a legit good goalie sometimes.

I was more pissed the Devils showed just about zero fight in this game after a certain point. 2nd period we were stuck on 12 shots for what seemed like the whole period. No pushback, no real big hits. It just about looks like they collected a paycheck and went home after going down 2-0.

There were a few glorious chances to bring it back to a 1 goal deficit and no one could manifest it out

Keefe will fix these bugs, lots of season left
They need depth. They are running three AHLers in the bottom 6 and Haula and Tatar’s puck skills have eroded them. They need to get contributions from them on nights like this where the top 6 gets bottled up / puck doesn’t go in. The good thing is probably easiest thing to fix ahead of the playoffs.

Lots of season left and a very solid record and position so far in the season. The team has been really solid overall this season. Happy with where the team is at.

Frustrating but I will take this trajectory every time over the past decade except 22-23. Let's give a chance for Keefe to fix.
Agreed. This team has the potential to be as good I think, especially on paper. They also play a more structured brand of hockey, and their 5v5 game is taking shape.

I don’t think Blackwood is a legitimate good goalie (he’s having a decent season though, his first since his second year here) but Wedgewood is pretty much a nobody scrub who was destined for a career minor league goalie until he was 28 or 29? When he spent his first full season in the NHL (a shortened season) because a guy retired in training camp.

The goalie coach in Dallas is one of the best and even got one last decent year out of the cremains of Holtby, who was basically on his career death bed (was shut down with injury midseason and never played again) so I’m not surprised he looked relevant for a couple years there.

When Wedgewood was the age Blackwood is now I think most would have thought that Wedgewood probably had already played the most NHL games that he’d ever play.

I don’t think so at all.

Especially since the empty net goal is an automatic. You’re telling me that the Avs had a non-empty net expected goals of below 1?

I didn’t watch the 3rd or last 5 minutes of the 2nd, but we looked pretty lifeless and tired after the first 10 minutes of the 1st and the BS disallowed goal.

I’m assuming the 3rd period was mostly score effects, because the 2nd period was really just not much of anything going on for us. It wasn’t that we were bad as much as we just had nothing going

gotta dump Palat this summer. I defended him up until this year, but he is an absolute nothing and making way too much money. Pay a pick to dump him if you have to.
He’s probably the worst top-6 regular we’ve had in the lineup since the Hynes era.

I’m just talking him this year, not since he got here.

And I’m also talking regulars. Not fill in’s or call ups we’ve had in between the Hynes era and now.

On pace for 23 points playing mostly with guys who are on pace for 96 and 101 points.

He should and will be bought out after the season. One great play in 2,5 years just doesn't cut it. This contract was one of the worst mistakes by Fitz that's for sure.

I’m not sure if he’ll be bought out after this year, but it will be the year after if he isn’t, barring LTIRement.

I think they’ll try to dump him, but if he don’t wanna be sent to wherever they wanna dump him then maybe he does get bought out.

I think they already know they can’t have him next year, for both salary purposes and on-ice performance.

If he was cheaper he could play the role next year they’ve given to Tatar this year.

These losses suck and that 2nd period was arguably one of their worst of the season. It's was borderline embarssing how they were screwing up routine plays and not playing with any intensity whatsoever. That Hamilton fumble that led to the third goal sealed the game for the Avs. He's been pretty noticeably bad the last few games...but we have been watching him for practically 3 plus seasons now so we know what he does well and what he does bad.

The Avs are a top heavy team on offense and we basically lost to their bottom 6 today. The Devils need Bastian back and hopefully Lazar I'd possible late in the year. I'm tired of seeing Dowling and whatever AHL plug they call up. Just call Halonen up and give him a legit chance to get in games.

Exactly. But he would be the most expensive 4th line ever.

13-6 stretch with 5 shutout losses has to be the funniest stat of the year

I mean Tatar makes basically every line more effective and Palat has made every line less effective. He made the 4th line unplayable. I wouldn’t even want him on the team at league min anymore
