Can't see any team trading for Gibson without retention, not just the Avs. At best, with 50% retention, the Ducks might pick up a mid round pick. Maybe a 2nd, but that's being generous
Friedman on thursday said teams weren't really concerned about his contract that there are teams who've talked about Gibson at full price. The problem has been his health has pushed away teams from wanting to take it on while giving up anything of value.

Which the Ducks really have no reason to just give away Gibson either.

He also said that he never heard anything about Gibson to the Avs other than media guys just asking if it makes sense. So who knows if he actually looked into it or is just adding it to the Blackwood rumor.

I can see Blackwood going there and maybe next year if Georgijev hasn't turned things around youngster Ilya Nabakov comes over for a look see!Of course the Avalanche need to sign him first

I don't think the Ducks would take back salary on Gibson and would they really want Georgiev? I don't see Blackwood as an upgrade to Georgiev either.
If someone wants Gibson the Ducks should give him away they have Dostal and Clara as their Goaltenders of the Now and Future

Are we talking about the same Gibson?
Most ducks fans I talked to hoped his injury this season was career ending. He was a good goalie for the first few years and then turned into post Sharks Antti Niemi for the last 5 years
His numbers have been down in recent years, but that was behind the ducks historically bad defense. And it is not an exaggeration to say historically bad. They gave up the most shots on goal in a season, and many of those were top quality shots.

In recent years, Gibson has started the season strong and then worn down under the burden of having to be perfect and being pummeled with shots. Most ducks fans feel he can still be a very good goalie but are happy to turn over the job to Dostal.

Gibson at 50% ($3.2) is reasonable for a BACKUP goalie. A backup goalie gets you a mid round pick. And any team trading for Gibson is not planning for him to be a backup. So this is just a bad take on all fronts (even before you consider the ducks taking back Gorgiev).

Keep in mind, his contract is pretty buyout friendly. So if the ducks really want to get rid of him, they can either (a) waive him and bury him if he's not claimed; or (b) buy him out in the future.

If Gibson has his typical strong start behind a hopefully improved ducks team, he should be an attractive trade asset this year or next.

Clara isn't anywhere near ready and Dostal can use the support of a veteran. They have Reimer who could fit that role. Gorgiev would also be a reasonable solution if he's part of a trade. But Clara is not a part of the equation this year.

Remember how bad Adin Hill looked in San Jose compared to Vegas?

The Blackwood Sharks teams are even worse. Not saying he is going to be some Conn Smythe candidate but probably at worse he gives passable goaltending.

Sharks can also afford to bury Georgiev in the AHL if they want to bring Askarov up so from a contract and cap perspective it makes some sense too.

Unless Georgiev suddenly and mysteriously develops a hip injury upon being assigned to the AHL.😬

I did say Clara is the Future and Dostal is the present

If you think a 2nd for a huge risk for 3 years even with retention is a bad take yikes. Goalies historically have had poor returns, even rental goalies

Look at other goalie contracts, particularly with the current trend.

There is virtually no risk in locking up a solid (or better) goalie in his prime for 3 years at $3.2M. Again, that is the cost of an above average backup.

Career backup Anthony Stolarz signed for 2 years at $2.5M. Joey Daccord just signed a 5 x $5. Tristan Jarry has 4 more years at $5.375. Vanecek in SJ makes $3.4M. Jake Allen $3.85M. Mrazek $4.25. Montembeault $3.15. F Andersen has 2 years at $3.4M.

Gibson at $6.4M x 3 is risky. He is not a real risk at $3.2M, particularly if in a worst case scenario you bury him or buy him out.

Yeah, you gotta figure anyone even considering Gibson has to believe there's a decent shot that he can still be a starter. And if you do think that, and can get him at a backup's AAV, isn't that worth something? OTOH if the only way you'd take him is at 75% retention, then why would you consider him a potential solution at all?

If the value offered is no more than the Ducks could get for him in two years as a veteran backup rental (like a mid round pick), they might as well wait.

No thanks. Last thing ducks need is another LHD.

Nor are they likely to do a retain of that size on Fowler. He's not ancient, he's still a good 2nd pairing D, his salary is appropriate for what he is, and there's no commitments long term. If someone wants Fowler at 50% they better pony up a lot more than spare parts, because half the teams in the league would be all over that.

The same thing has been said for years now, and they have nothing to show for it. They should have traded him when they could have gotten a 1st+. Especially since they draft pretty well.

I don't think that was ever on the table. The term and AAV was probably too high for a cap-constrained contender. Rebuilding teams weren't giving up a 1st. So all that's left were middling teams who maybe were a goalie away, but had young assets to spare, and wouldn't settle for a lesser but cheaper option ... but I can't think of who that'd be.

They should be calling Detroit about Alex Lyon or Cam Talbot.

Lyon has started the season standing on his head. It’s 3 years in a row now, where he’s proven he can give someone really good goaltending. You just can’t overwork him.

He’s proven a heck of a lot more than many others have in the last 3 seasons. If he doesn’t stand on his head, his last two starts, Detroit is sitting on 1 win, instead of 3. He’s been that good.

Think they said 83 saves out of his last 85 shots, and there’s been more than a few highlight worthy saves. To have given up 5 goals so far in 3 starts and a relief appearance, and still having a .955 save percentage, you’re getting peppered. He’s responding though.

The thing is, Detroit has some big problems to address and there’s a good chance they’ll be selling this year. Alex Lyon is gonna be right up there with Patrick Kane when teams are calling.

Nabokov is on the horizon for the Avs, his agent said he is most likely coming next season. They realistically only need an upgrade for this season, and next season as Nabokov splits starts to get used to the league.
