As I said in the Russian roster thread, it’s going to take time from the grass roots level to start incorporating a return to the Soviet systems and style of play.

It’s a noble and worthy endeavour, when Russians are playing their classic system it is a very beautiful form of hockey to watch.
i don't think such a return is possible, it's just a silly hype, talking heads talking.

Is just me or is the Russian team real bad at moving the puck. So many passes off skates, Austrian sticks, or just off target. And, especially the defense, seem to have passes bouncing off their sticks showing no touch at all. They look so scrabbly. Lack of skill in moving puck is surprising to me.

I expect that the Russian boys will get a soviet-style can of whoop-ass from their coach in the locker room and will come out and light us up...but it was a good period.

Technically the 2011 team was also terrible in round robin. May be Podkolzin and Amirov will be the new Kuznetsov and Tarasenko and dominate the medal round

Can't have the Soviet style without the Soviet.
Absolutely. But I can't blame Larionov for trying to make something different. I like what I see, but these players simply lack the appropriate skill level to play this kind of hockey thus these stupid mistakes by the D. The D is trying to support the forwards in their cycle, but they are not skilled and fast enough to avoid counter attacks.

Professor will not do this :) also why are so many coaches from SKA system...What has their system produced, except for being able to poach left and right?

They are different caliber of players. Amirov reminds me of Filatov

And this team reminds me the team where Filatov played, which got knocked out in 1/4 finals

Can't have the Soviet style without the Soviet.
Not necessarily, BUT certainly not without the massive training of players to reach at least a comparable level of understanding of hockey, level of skating and passing and so on.

I honestly had Russia as the favorites going in (Canada second), and I still believe...

I think games against cheese teams like Austria with their cheese style are not really indicative.

technically the 2011 team was loaded with talent - Panarin, Kuznetsov, Tarasenko, Orlov, Zaitsev,
at the time the tourhnament started Zaitsev was a non-name, and Panarin was barely known. They both put themselves on the map that year in the WJC

You say that now, but nobody knew the latter two and Panarin at that time. Perhaps Chinakhov will be the new Panarin
Surely not. Those players were on another level and everybody knew it fro the get go.

Yep, you see it right. The Professor is supposed to be the Master of Soviet Hockey which was all crisp passing. I don't know what they do in practice, but in games they look like they are barely able to complete a pass.

I see there is no placement game between the last team in each pool.. I assume they will go by points, wins and who knows what after that to decide 9th and 10th for next year.
