Who would realistically want a guy that makes $13M and doesn’t care about his job?

There will be a long line of GMs foaming at the mouth to get this guy if he was seriously available.

They play if playoffs, and regulars don't especially matter. I mean Kucherov used to look great on the IR either. It's now when he's healthy he doesn't look great when it matters.

Matthews would be the best player on majority of teams, we all know that…but a team will never win a cup w him running the show. He doesn’t have that in him. You need to be able to take control, have guys feed off your play, your intensity, showing teammates how to leave it all on the ice after every game. The playoffs is a different animal. A lot of top players don’t have that ability to step up in the playoffs, take on that pressure and prove that you can handle it. I just don’t see it in Matthews or Marner. It’s almost like the pressure is too much for them.

Particularly the market that they play in. The pressure in Trona in hockey is like no other market.

This is probably Toronto asking for too much (or is it? IDK) but maybe could be used as a starting point? I'm assuming Buffalo fans will refuse to give up both the goalie prospect swap AND the forward prospect, and will counter with only one of them (or with neither).

Yeah that's too much from the Sabres I'd say, mainly because it'd likely be Matthews only stays for the remainder of this contract.

The Sabres have so many assets that they could keep Thompson and still get another main C.

Matthews with a full no move is going to be a tough move because that clause with that cap is going to kill the team’s leverage.

It doesn’t. That’s wishful thinking. If he only wants 1 team that won’t give up anything then you keep him.

If he wants out you work with him. But if not you are happy to keep him. This isn’t a JT miller/peterson situation.

There are no real contending team that will have any interest in Matthews.

He is not the kind of player who help team to win title.

He is strictly regular season performer.

How will you feel if LA will do the following to the Leafs:

Kings will sign Marner for free.

They will make big OS for Knies, which Toronto will match decreasing their salary cap space.

This is only 2 real actions I can see happening between these 2 teams.

I believe the Leafs are going to make a lot of changes of front but Matthews will not be that change.

Teans that trade their 2026 and 2027 1sts don't tend to rebuild.

Plus when was the lastv time you saw the division winner rebuild?

Every team that wants to make the playoffs above all else. Contrary to what fans want most owners only care about playoff revenue and selling jerseys. Even just 2-3 home games is better than nothing.

Switch out Protas with McMichael and I say deal
