Auston Matthews vs Steven Stamkos

If matthews stays healthy, him.

Its really a shame what happened to stamkos with that leg injury.

Coming from a Lightning fan, I'd say when all is said n done, probably Auston Matthews if he continues on the path he is on.

That said, I am glad though that Stamkos has become more than just a trigger man.
He can still generate offense, make players around him better, but he does everything else you want from a forward...faceoffs, checks, plays defense, positionally sound.... to make him truly a much more complete player than Matthews is at this point in his career.

I realize much of what Stamkos does now was necessitated by injury, but fact is, he pretty much does everything for the team on and off the ice (including taking a hometown discount to help keep the team competitive).
On top of that, Stammer has the big prize Matthews does not: A Stanley Cup....and it is possible #91 ends up with more of them before he has to retire.

At some point Matthews may also turn into a do-everything player, but for now, he is more a goal scorer than Stamkos, is very good at it, and I give him the nod in that department.

Stamkos after 5 seasons had goal finishes of 1,1,2,2. Even if Matthews wins a mickey mouse rocket this year, he'll have finishes of 1,2,3. Now consider that Stamkos was neck and neck with 25 year old OV, but Matthews in a normal season can't beat 35 year old OV. Also doubt Matthews has a better goal scoring year than Stamkos' 11/12.
What garbage. Matty's been injured and missed games and that's why he didn't eke out ovie. But just cus your boi is not delivering this season doesn't mean its a mickey mouse season. If the leafs get to face the sens for 8 games your team gets to face a trash buffalo and njd team.

edit: nvm read stats wrong lol.

The season isn't a Mickey Mouse season and if Matthews wins the Rocket it's a legit win. With that said though it doesn't mean he's performing at the same level as Stamkos thus far in his career. Could of, would of, should of=hasn't and didn't.

Stamkos I think. He's got the rockets and the 60 goal season. Also outscored Matthews in the last full season (2018/2019).

That being said, I wouldn't exactly be shocked if Matthews winds up the better goal scorer. He's definitely got the ability, will probably outscore Stammer from now on, and I'm sure will get at least 1 rocket at some point (probably this year actually).

Just think this is still Stammer for now.

It’s not Stamkos so far at all

Afraid it is though.

Stamkos had higher finishes, two 50+ goal seasons, 3 45+ goal seasons, and 29 in a shortened 48 game campaign. He won two Rockets and had 1 of the 2 60+ goal seasons in the past 25 years.

Matthews has a great opportunity from here on out though, but his body of work through each of their first handful of seasons firmly placed him second.

This is a strange post considering Matthews is a better defensive player than Stamkos.

Conveniently left out the games played eh

Stamkos first 4 seasons: 0.55 goals per game
Matthews first 4 seasons: 0.56 goals per game

Now both have shortened 5th seasons but Matthews career moves to 0.58 and Stamkos to 0.56

It’s not Stamkos so far at all

I think Matthews has played in higher scoring league than Stammer did though.

That said, I voted Matthews.

Way too early to know the answer to this question but at the same age Stamkos is ahead so I went with him.

All those words to say they are close when comparing them to their peers? Interesting

More complete is an interesting word considering Matthews is better at just about everything

Matthews is a lot longer. We’ll see who has more Cups when it’s all said and done. Doesn’t seem like a fair argument right now at all.

I’m so confused by this post. Do you think Matthews isn’t a do-everything player? Have you even seen him play? I’m just so lost at how you’re praising Stamkos for being complete and acting like Matthews isn't. What’s the basis for any of this. Matthews is much more complete than Stamkos

Stamkos had the better start to his career but I'm willing to bet on Matthews staying healthy to have the better overall career.

Matthews cuz of stamkos’s injuries, no broken leg and it’d be very very interesting, stamkos would’ve given ovi a running for a couple more rockets imo

It is threads like these that Leaf fans EXPECT accolades because they are Toronto instead of actually earning them on the ice.

But X per 82 games or X per 60 min

Never real stats...just extrapolated ones. Sad sad stuff.

high GPG is significanty less impressive and easier to have when you play less games. It's Stamkos
