I'm not the GM of a franchise but that's irrelevant, him playing in Ottawa wouldn't magically make me like him, just like I didn't like Yashin, especially in his last season. Also wanted Bobby Ryan gone the second he signed for 7.25 just like I want Norris gone now. This is a cap league and cap hits matter alot!Matthews would come 3rd on that list. you are way over thinking it, Id fire you if you thought this way with how much the cap is rising.
so you would pass on one of the top players in the league for free to sign a couple middle 6 forwards who will be making 7-8m in a year or 2?
Yikes, maybe I should say 9/10 would take Matthews if they could because your obviously that 1
your fandom shouldnt matter when your the GM of a franchise.
there's no assuming on the cap going up. its going up. unless you think another pandemic will start and shutdown the NHL for a year?Yup, the Leafs assumed the cap would go up just like you are now. Maybe if AM34 had actually signed long term, but he didn't, 3 more seasons and he'll make sure his current ridiculous paychecks will get even more ridiculous. Don't want him on my team and haven't ever since his little pants down stunt in Arizona
5th for me & distantly so, winning matters and McDavid is inarguably better even without winning, proved that again last nightThird on that list? Which one of those four has Matthews proven to be better?
You are demonstrating a lack of understanding of what the word assumption means. None of us can predict the future. Yes, I think the cap is going up too, but no, I don't know that it is. Sh1t happens, I thought we all learned that lesson. Reality also says the odds of him joining Ottawa "for free" at any point are far lower than the odds that the cap suddenly doesn't go up as predicted. I dislike Marchand too, but would have loved him as a Sen. I despise Matthews, big differencethere's no assuming on the cap going up. its going up. unless you think another pandemic will start and shutdown the NHL for a year?
thats the only downside to his contract is its short term so he will prob make alot more. either way if you would turn him down joining your team for nothing. you dont deserve to ever be a GM of a team. your letting your fandom get the better of you.
I have always hated Brad Marchand but Id have happily taken him on my team.
whats your argument for placing Eichel or Barkov over Matthews? Eichel and Barkov arent even ppg in their career. when its all said and done Matthews will be higher on the all time list. stop being biased.Third on that list? Which one of those four has Matthews proven to be better?
Barkov and Eichel won cups while being absolutely key players, that’s the difference herewhats your argument for placing Eichel or Barkov over Matthews? Eichel and Barkov arent even ppg in their career. when its all said and done Matthews will be higher on the all time list. stop being biased.
unless you think because they won a cup they are better. if so I guess Barkov and Eichel should place over McDavid and MacKinnon?
well I guess we will see, NHL has pretty much confirmed its going up big time. likely to be $95.5 million next season.5th for me & distantly so, winning matters and McDavid is inarguably better even without winning, proved that again last night

This is like saying "Well yeah, he drives drunk every weekend but he's been convicted of a DUI two times!"Incorrect
He's 0-7 in games where it's winner takes all games, not do or die.
He forced a game 7 in 2018 vs Boston, he forced game 5 vs Columbus, forced game 7 vs Boston in 2024, was down 3-1 to Boston in 2024 and won 2 to force a game 7
I get it, you want to take this opportunity to shit on Matthews. At least have the decency to do it correctly. Clown thread.
I assume that also, but again, it's an assumption and still doesn't remotely change my opinion of AM34well I guess we will see, NHL has pretty much confirmed its going up big time. likely to be $95.5 million next season.

NHL, NHLPA estimate significant salary cap bump over next three seasons
The NHL and NHLPA have released projected salary cap estimates over the next three seasons with significant increases coming.www.sportsnet.ca
so unless we have another pandemic that stops the world.... caps going up
I know, I'm just saying if you're gonna try and make a bash Matthews thread at least be accurateThis correction is not flattering
Eichel and Barkov lead their teams to cups as 1st line centres (as did MacKinnon) and Matthews can't even get out of the 2nd round, this shouldn't be a mystery. You seem to literally only care about ppgwhats your argument for placing Eichel or Barkov over Matthews? Eichel and Barkov arent even ppg in their career. when its all said and done Matthews will be higher on the all time list. stop being biased.

Matthews is a tier above Jack Hughes. He’s a tier below Eichel though. Eichel led his club to the Cup.He’s been awful in game 7’s yes, but if he played every game 7 like last night we’d probably win over half of them. He outplayed mackinnon and Crosby and Mcdavid last night. Did he make a mistake? Yes but if not for him and B Tkachuk, than the US are losing 2-0 in regulation. You could just as easily say, when the game was at its most intense and most, Binnington made saves and hellybuyck didn’t.
Guys like Eichel, Hughes did absolutely nothing last night, but we don’t see a thread on them now.
Disagree. Fox was fine. Matthews didn't put a lot of effort in pursuing the puck. To be fair, it's McDavid who's a master of finding open space but that space doesn't get open if Matthews doesn't lackadaisically put himself in a no man's position where he's not close enough to Marner to pressure the pass and not close enough to McDavid to stop it from happening. Wingers bailed on the play too, seemingly forgetting the most dangerous player in the game was making his way to the slot. All around loose, poor coverage from team USA forwards.
yet when its all said and done they will both be placed behind Matthews on the all-time list. unless there's major injury and his career is shutdown quicklyBarkov and Eichel won cups while being absolutely key players, that’s the difference here
Matthews can win all the regular season awards he wants but if he doesn’t start winning when it matters nobody will care
Let’s just say that is the case, it makes my point even strongerMatthews is a tier above Jack Hughes. He’s a tier below Eichel though. Eichel led his club to the Cup.
right on, well u should prob never be in charge of running a team if your fandom controls you so much. but hey that's fine.I assume that also, but again, it's an assumption and still doesn't remotely change my opinion of AM34
That’s a lot of praise for Sam BennettI thought he had a really good game last night., especially given he was getting matched up against the best player in the world.
Matthews already has more points than Eichel as well 158 more goals, only 69 points behind Barkov with 182 less games played but he also has 108 more goals. and more awards than both of them combinedEichel and Barkov lead their teams to cups as 1st line centres (as did MacKinnon) and Matthews can't even get out of the 2nd round, this shouldn't be a mystery. Winning Cups is what separates the greatest players. Matthews (imo) will be ranked below Eichel and Barkov and Kopitar because those other three are great players too, who led their teams to Cups. Crosby, McKinnon, and McDavid (even though he doesn’t have a Cup) are clearly superior players to Matthews.yet when its all said and done they will both be placed behind Matthews on the all-time list. unless there's major injury and his career is shutdown quickly

winning a cup matters for sure but only so much. it matters if you wanna bump all time greats out like McDavid for example. he will prob need atleast a cup win to bump himself into the top 4. or breaking 2k points will prob do the trick along with all his awards
winning a cup helps but it's not enough for them to both place above Matthews. in the end Matthews will likely have more goals and points as well more awards than both combined. where would you place Jonathan Toews all time?Winning Cups is what separates the greatest players. Matthews is great, but there are clubs that wouldn’t pursue him because they have better players and can’t afford to allocate so much cap to him.
No one posting on here will ever be a GM of any team. For the most part you are right in that personal feelings shouldn't factor in so much, but certain players for certain guys are just no go's and AM34 is that for me. Adam Fox too for me and I imagine all Flames and Canes fan feel the same, but that's based on the way he forced his way to NY. You can add McGroarty and Cutter Gauthier to my no no list too, culture matters and guys who give any indication that they play for the name on the back and not the logo on the front I wouldn't touch. There's more to players than just their ppg and point totalsright on, well u should prob never be in charge of running a team if your fandom controls you so much. but hey that's fine.
