FFS if you can’t be loyal to a program, be committed and be willing to work through growth, you’re not worth having in a leadership role, and those 4-6 weeks won’t matter.

We might as well just pull the plug now if this guy can’t be enthusiastic about the 1OA and getting the biggest UFA weeks before July 1.

.. he's signed 2 contract extensions with us, I think you are being a little dramatic here.

I don’t think it’s “being dramatic” so much as seeing a declining player make open ended demands on the team that seem reasonable on the surface but maybe implacable when you look again.

What Toronto needs most is a 1C who scores 50 goals 100 points and plays a 200 foot game. If Matthews can’t do that anymore, there’s not a lot of roster building that can compensate for that.

My point is why not just push this to the ultimate conclusion and just move the player for a Hershel Walker return?

Because perhaps he doesn't want to go? All of what you are getting worked up over is because of something someone didn't say.

Even if he says he wants to stay, would that quiet everything down? Nope, how he says it will be analyzed to death.

It's a no win for him. So why bother acknowledging it at all?

Not only are the demands there but if he wanted to get paid then he could get that with Toronto (again) and not make these demands while declining in production. Such unusual timing which makes me lean into the American wants to play in an American market following the Olympics theory.

Why are you raging around the boards against Matthews over one cherry picked and completely unsubstantiated rumour

Also the rumours literally did say he is excited about the 1st overall pick and likely McKenna joining the club

There is even talk he might make the pick on Friday

I think it’s important that he doesn’t walk for free. Zero assets added to Marner leaving is not acceptable.
Whatever the path, stay short term, re-sign or not commit. It must be done by next year with 1 season remaining. This is the test year.

We got a first for Marner but point remains.

We all need a big year from him. Then he can choose to sign next year or we can deal him somewhere and start the rebuild
