Here are some players who have similar stats to Matthews in their first 40-60 playoff games:

Matthews had 23 goals in 55 playoff games

Sundin had 25 in 55
Kessel had 27 in 55
Kadri had 19 in 52
Daniel Briere had 22 in 57
Patrick Kane had 20 in 51
Roenick had 28 in 58
Alfresson had 22 in 44
Tarasenko had 22 in 44
Point had 22 in 44
Guentzel had 34 in 56
Filip Forsberg had 22 in 55
Giroux had 23 in 57

There are some good players there, but none of them are even CLOSE to Matthews talent and specifically goal scoring talent.

While McDrai are putting up Gretzky/Lemieux like numbers, Matthews is not even close to that tier, he is in the next tier of good goal scorers (who some of them outscore him) and good playmakers (who pretty much put up the same goals), all while he's earning one of/teh highest salary in the league.

Also worth noting

None of those guys were ever top 5 highest players in the league

Most of them didn't have the cast like Matthews

Most of them who didn't contribute in scoring contributed other areas of the game

With Matthews is a 3 point game or nothing

One game is he's amazing only to drop the ball next game

What has to be noted Is their age by the time most of them have played 55 games

They were much younger than Matthews.

Most of them 55 playoff games into their mid 20s. They would have played multiple rounds per year

When u can score 70 goals in your sleep, there has to be some balance from the hockey gods. Matthews missed 2 playoff games and wont say why? He is a soft big man and it appears he was looking for a way out or an excuse to deal with another playoff series lost. Berube hopefully can call out Matthews and lower his ego, Matthews ego is an issue.

It wasn't in his sleep. The entire team game planned to get him 70 goals (and failed). Also it looks like he got hurt in the final week which cost him games in the playoffs which is why they are being so shady about disclosing this information. Individual accolades > team accomplishments.

People speculated that it was a leg injury from McAvoy but they said it was a head injury. 🤔

Yeah all that talk of Matthews giving it the old I have a reason I'm not producing, gave poor Will a headache that wouldn't go away, and Mitch thinking why should I give it 110% if these guys don't.

Matthews is much more suited for the Swiss league. He should go back to Zurich Lions and become the Lion of Zurich. In North America he's just a harmless house cat.

I think Matthews has a higher gear. Not to defend the Leafs roster decisions or whatever. Nylander and Matthews both need to be better.

But it is kinda obvious why they chose these two guys. It's very plausible for their game to elevate with linemates that fit better. In Matthews entire career, only Nylander could shoot as a wing and he mostly played with Willy when he wasn't as good.

Imagine hitting 40+ in 6 of 8 seasons and hitting 60+ twice and the first thing people comment about you is your hair loss.

Welcome to hell.
To be honest, after 142 pages of this thread and many of use not changing our mind on him or his play or his spot on the team, It really isn't the first thing we comment on. Its just that everything else we could possibly say has been said over and over, every argument has been made....and some of us just feel the need to post something (its an addiction).

That’s a lot of money for one round of playoff hockey.

16.7 million per playoff goal. Toronto sure does know how to budget.

The Leafs are comedy.

Not sure why anyone should care about the figures shown in that image tbh. AAV is all that matters. And top players who signed recently usually find their way toward the top of lists like this. Especially ones that are like Matthews.

Nylander contract is a bit egregious but that’s hardly some news flash that we overpaid him. Hopefully he takes another step in his consistency under Berube.

Fatter than me with smaller arms. What are we paying this guy for :sarcasm:

That is what peak performance looks like for today's bionic superhero players after all that time in the gym with sports specific training and proper nutrition.

Or at least that is what hfboards claims all the time when they say players of the past were plumbers.

The evidence is a little less conclusive lol

Today's kittens would be scared to touch the ice surface in eras past.

That game against Detroit was so cursed in retrospect. McMann also got injured getting tangled with Debrincat and he was out weeks. I'm not saying we would've beat Boston with a healthy Bobby but his speed, shot, and physicality would've greatly helped.

Berube needs to hold Matthews accountable. Matthews should have been benched multiple times in the past. His compete level is embarassing at times, Berube needs to call him out and bench him. This will be an ongoing thing and fair of Berube to call him out. If Matthews responds, he could get 75 goals

I don’t care how many goals he scores in the regular season. He needs to score in the playoffs and needs a team around him that is built for playoff success. Regular season scoring stats are not a yardstick for this team anymore. Look at the best team in the league. None of Tkachuk, Bennett or Barkov scored 30 goals in the regular season but their depth and relentless work ethic overwhelms their opponents.

I have to be honest, I don't care what the stats say I am not sure how someone can watch Matthews and think he is not built for the playoffs. This year he was primed for a massive year and got hurt. Last year he carried us in round 1 and then it went sideways but he was so elite in round 1.

He has all the tools and has IMO improved every year. Someone thinking Matthews is the problem to me, their opinion on hockey is irrelevant.
Agree.
