Come on, McDavid has 5 100 point seasons already. I love Matthews, but even if I bleed blue and white, McDavid is still a tier higher.
“It turns out to be very lucky that” we got the next best 1st overall pick in the last decade ( some can argue MacKinnon ).
Imagine we sucked at a different time and got any other first overall pick instead. Hischier? Dahlin? Even Hughes… just not the same stratosphere as Matthews![]()
Also scores significantly more goals which is the hardest thing to do individually in the NHL.Matthews is definitely on the same tier as McDavid this season. The difference in their PPG is 6-7 points over a full season, and Auston is bigger and stronger defensively.
I know this sounds really stupid - but when we drafted Matthews I could see him raising the cup. The thing, is that in this vision - he is the Captain.
If John Tavares wants to go down as an absolute beauty and a beloved Leaf of all time, please do this:
Prior to Game 1 of the playoffs right after the warmup - pull all the boys and coaches into the room.
Make a speech in front of EVERYONE about what being a Leaf means to him and the privilege it is being the Leaf’s Captain.
You then casually take off your Jersey - only to have another one on underneath. This other jersey is adorned with a big “A”.
You then say…Remember that kid in the picture with his Leafs jammies on? Ya, well that kid was dreaming about winning the Cup.
He then tosses Matthews a jersey with the “C” and continues - but the only way we win this thing is with you leading the team.
This is your team and every single one of us has your f***ing back. It starts right f***ing now.
:roomerupts:
We slay the ghost of 1967 right there.
It's been mentioned before but it's still weird to think about. We were so close to drafting a generational player in McDavid but the lottery didn't work for us. So we ended up getting one of the best playmakers in the league. Then the following year we get our generational goal scoring machine in Matthews.
It goes to show that even if something may seem devastating at first, like missing the lottery for McDavid, life could turn out being even better than you expected. Makes me think all these devastating playoff first round exits may be leading to something....

He could’ve had another trick or more tonight. Lots of great chances. Just keep doing what you’re doing mate
