So Matthews said he got injured in training camp?
That is what is some fans are now mad about, to be injured all season and not rest up to play in a tournament like that is very selfish. He played in 4nations. That guy
Exactly. It's all symbolic, there's no real "captaining" involved.Yeah.
My opinion is that it was easy to pick Matthews as captain because it really was quite meaningless over such a short stretch of time.
So more symbolic than functional, so give it to the "high profile / high award" player without really expecting it to amount to anything.
Exactly. I said this a number of times - if you can get healthy in time for the playoffs, then sit out until you're healthy, period. He says he'll be 100% for next season without surgery, he obviously wasn't right all season so why even play? OK try a few games maybe but if it's not working, shut it down in November, come back in March, simple. Instead we get half of the 69 goal scorer he was the last season, and fall just short of beating Florida. That is what is some fans are now mad about, to be injured all season and not rest up to play in a tournament like that is very selfish.
Yes it’s a calling to play for your country, but when olympics are literally next year why not heal up and play then?
This me first attitude is what’s wrong with the Leafs taking the next step.
It’s time to move on from Matthews and the core.
Matthews wasn’t exactly lighting it up vs Mike Amadio and friends in the Ottawa series.
from what I heard he went to meet the Orthopaedic surgeon who works for Bayern MunichThe injury news isn't surprising.
He flew to Germany in November to see a a medical specialist, and he LOOKED off for most of the season - especially his shooting.
That said, still doesn't make him immune to criticism. Attending the 4 Nations in retrospect (even though as a fan it was some of the most fun hockey of the year) was a very poor choice.
What matters now is getting him healed up for October.
taking 13million plus a season but cant even tell his fanbase his injury in the off season? what is serrrriously wong with this guy lol he just makes himself more unlikable each time he speaks to the public
The calling to play for your country doesn't really work here, when:That is what is some fans are now mad about, to be injured all season and not rest up to play in a tournament like that is very selfish.

Shame on the people bashing Matthews when he was clearly playing injured and just admitted to that.
I hope he gets the rest and recovery he needs, comes back next year and shuts the haters up once and for all.
Admitted to a season-long injury and yet, he still played in the Four Nations
Bro he CHOSE to play.Shame on the people bashing Matthews when he was clearly playing injured and just admitted to that.

The calling to play for your country doesn't really work here, when:
- Four Nations was less than a year away from the Olympics
- Other players decided not to play at the Four Nations to prioritize their health, and their teams.
Byfield is 22 Matthews is 28If Matthews is the problem how is Byfield the solution? 4 year loser to Edmonton he doesn't get it done either. Or this is what people would say if Byfield lost in round 1 with Toronto.
Four Nations was for a rare chance to represent his country...
He said today that he thinks 3+ months off will help him get back to 100% for the start of next season.Matthews has also never bothered representing Team USA for love of sport and country at any point after 2016, unlike Willie who might go join Sweden for the hell of it once again.
So it’s not like you needed to organize your whole year around a 4 game exhibition tourney (which he was load managed for one of). It all just seems like poorly planned, want-it-all prestige seeking bull.
And even if he did need surgery, he’s not taking it in his own free time in the summer.
The cynic in me thinks he comes back wonky, has another up and down year, gets past Olympics and then shuts it down well and truly.
