Player Discussion Auston Matthews (Captain Edition)

I think if you are one of the 18 players on this roster who make 28% or less of what Matthews makes hearing about too many passengers is a hard pill to swallow.

Matthews sits there in contract negotiations and says:

I’m the guy who scored 69 goals
I’m the Rocket winner
I’m the Hart winner
I’m the Person winner
I’m the best player on this team
I deserve to be the 2nd highest paid player in the league
I deserve 15%+ of the cap

If I’m one of those guys who makes 28% of Matthews or less I’m thinking, now it’s “we” had too many passengers. Now we are a team. If Matthews needed more help maybe he could have left a little money on the table and there would be less passengers. But thanks for the 2 shots and the -2 Cap. We will try and live up to your expectations next time. It just doesn’t feel like the kind of comment that a leader makes. If you want to be the man then you are the man every day. You don’t get to take the day off when you lose. You go out to the media and you eat it.

He played in 4nations. That guy
That is what is some fans are now mad about, to be injured all season and not rest up to play in a tournament like that is very selfish.

Yes it’s a calling to play for your country, but when olympics are literally next year why not heal up and play then?

This me first attitude is what’s wrong with the Leafs taking the next step.

It’s time to move on from Matthews and the core.

Yeah.

My opinion is that it was easy to pick Matthews as captain because it really was quite meaningless over such a short stretch of time.

So more symbolic than functional, so give it to the "high profile / high award" player without really expecting it to amount to anything.
Exactly. It's all symbolic, there's no real "captaining" involved.

Exactly. I said this a number of times - if you can get healthy in time for the playoffs, then sit out until you're healthy, period. He says he'll be 100% for next season without surgery, he obviously wasn't right all season so why even play? OK try a few games maybe but if it's not working, shut it down in November, come back in March, simple. Instead we get half of the 69 goal scorer he was the last season, and fall just short of beating Florida.

A healthy Matthews, and we're in the EFC. FML.

The injury news isn't surprising.

He flew to Germany in November to see a a medical specialist, and he LOOKED off for most of the season - especially his shooting.

That said, still doesn't make him immune to criticism. Attending the 4 Nations in retrospect (even though as a fan it was some of the most fun hockey of the year) was a very poor choice.

What matters now is getting him healed up for October.

I wonder who the passengers were. Tbh I thought they played hard. I certainly don’t think they played to lose. They just didn’t and don’t have the right mix.

Give him a break, he's the first player to ever have an injury playing hockey. Sure he's been hurt for over a calender year, but you dont deserve to know what's wrong. Shame on you.

The calling to play for your country doesn't really work here, when:
  • Four Nations was less than a year away from the Olympics
  • Other players decided not to play at the Four Nations to prioritize their health, and their teams.

Shame on the people bashing Matthews when he was clearly playing injured and just admitted to that.

I hope he gets the rest and recovery he needs, comes back next year and shuts the haters up once and for all.
Bro he CHOSE to play.

What was even the logic of playing? Ok he plays to 4NF, but why not rest after that? Playing may not make it worse, but it's 1000000% not gonna make it better.

Rest up until the playoffs, wtf was he doing out there?

I guess we'll never know with Mysterious Matthews. Like last year when he didn't disclose his injuries.

This is our captain? Dude is afraid of disclosing an injury, hows he not gonna be afraid of doing the dirty stuff in game when it matters.

Matthews has also never bothered representing Team USA for love of sport and country at any point after 2016, unlike Willie who might go join Sweden for the hell of it once again.

So it’s not like you needed to organize your whole year around a 4 game exhibition tourney (which he was load managed for one of). It all just seems like poorly planned, want-it-all prestige seeking bull.

And even if he did need surgery, he’s not taking it in his own free time in the summer.

The cynic in me thinks he comes back wonky, has another up and down year, gets past Olympics and then shuts it down well and truly.

He said today that he thinks 3+ months off will help him get back to 100% for the start of next season.

Which begs the question: why not shut it down this season, get back to 100%, and hopefully come back for the playoffs?
