Player Discussion Auston Matthews (Captain Edition)

McDavid on the goal:

"Mitchy makes a play...thats a great, great play. Its kind of the system, the box and 1 system. The centerman and dman can kind of go....if they can get crossed up, that spot can be open....and Mitchy did a great job of finding it."

I thought it was also an underrated amazing play from Makar to rim it to the far corner like that with American coverage coming out to challenge him. Opened up the entire slot.

I think the weird behind the net route Fox decided to take also forced Matthews to think about Marner but it wasn’t stellar coverage from him.

Matthews and Fox screwed up bad. If I were Matthews I would be tossing that one in the bin and never thinking about it again.
 
I still like Matthews better than Marner.

The wannabe Olympics did nothing to change that fact. Maybe Marner did perform better than Matthews but who cares. Matthews is a sixty goal scoring franchise centreman.

Marner earns his living passing the puck to Matthews.

There's a reason USA born Matthews is Captain and not local boy Mitch Marner. Has nothing to do with their play either. Even though Matthews is, by far, the better player.

It has everything to do with attitude.

And even the casual fan knows Marner's is piss poor. Every time he opens his mouth something mind numbing comes out. There isn't a player on the team with a worse case of foot-in-mouth disease.

In terms of merit, entitlement, and character Matthews is superior to Marner in every way.
 
Will be nice to put Team USA Auston Matthews behind us and get back to Toronto Maple Leafs Auston Matthews, get back to supporting him.

If my aunt had cajones she would be my uncle.

There’s no “ifs” in sports. You either get it done or you don’t. McDavid got it done ant the end of the day and Matthews didn’t. Pure and simple.

On that point you're absolutely correct. The point isn't for Matthews to look valiant and impactful and nearly win it. The point is he needs to find a way to score and lead his team (the Leafs, nevermind the US) to win.

It was a set play done perfectly. Point hustling on the icing caused it

Who shot it around and marner picked it up and history.

It wasn't a face-off set play.

Sadly, now we have to from relying on guys that play with heart and soul to relying on a guy who plays with stick and puck.

Makar's read on the play and that rim around was excellent. Sent that whole defensive coverage into a mad scramble and opened up the entire slot.
