Matthews looked like he was dead inside after scoring on the powerplay against Buffalo. On pace for just 33 goals this season. Does anybody know what's wrong with him? If he doesn't pick it up he could fall short of his 9th straight season with atleast 34 goals...
Bad back , sabres were targeting him yst

Sounds like something that doesn’t improve or worsen based on play, which screams a back issue.
Hard to believe a back injury wouldn’t worsen playing nhl hockey, like he is off again

He went to Germany and what was bothering him didn’t get fixed. It was a temporary fix that didn’t last long. They need to shut him down and not let him go to four nations. I bet Matthews really wants to play in that but the team should not let him go. I can see this turning into another month of him being out.
Sadly the tournament may be the only reason he is not on LTIR right now.

The concern for this is that in a playoff series, he's going to get cross checked in the back multiple times a game

If he can't withstand that, our chances of doing anything are cooked

With back issues it's always tough to manage, but it feels like a complete shutdown might be a good option. We have 4 months till the playoffs, use them all to get him as close to 100% as possible

Agreed, him going to Four Nations could cost the Leafs big time.

He’s unreliable this season. Is what it is. Only increases the need to acquire another centre this season.
Almost like Nylander at C should've been tried more

If it is a back problem I can relate. Everyone has their own means to recover but he is playing a tough, physical sport. My back was so bad for so long at one point that it hurt to tie my shoes. Every day it was with me, when I walked, lied down, was at the gym. Luckily I was young enough, slightly younger than him and I was able to recover through simple, disciplined actions.

Again, I'm not a pro athlete so this will be a much bigger task for him.

You can tell that he hasn't been himself all season, it was clear really from the first game.

Reminds me of the 2002 series when Mats Sundin was targeted by the Islanders in the hands, wrist by Mike Peca, etc. which forced him out of the series. Eventually the Leafs Darcy Tucker responded with that low bridge taking out Peca and Gary Roberts took out their captain Kenny Jonsson with a paste job into the end boards.

Point is, if anyone goes after Matty, their key players should be repaid with interest. There's no way you get through a playoff run absorbing punishment without dishing out in kind.

If he was even remotely dealing with things, they shouldn't have dressed him last night....

It's not even a load management issue, it's common sense. Injuries need time to heal, stop playing him against awful teams when he doesn't have to until he's fully ready to go

Looks like he's out tonight.

I’m sure that cross check last night didn’t help, or the other 4 players on the ice just standing there.

Well, Rielly did go after Tage Lemieux after he blew up Matthews, but yeah next time we play the Sabres hopefully someone beats some sense into Thompson.

It wasn’t the Tage hit, it was a crosscheck in front of the net, right in the ribs. But regardless, let this guy sit for a long while

Good thing they rushed him back before he was actually healthy and maintained top secret classified status on his injury so that opposing teams didn't target him. Fantastic job managing injuries by this team, as always.

based on Berube’s prior comments about him battling through it, I expected him to have periods of missing games.

I’m hopeful it’s not as bad as it seems, and he’s being more precautionary with it.

For the love of god skip the 4 nations cup

I'm thinking it's probably precautionary, like the comments hinted at a load management cycle and B2B's aren't worth playing in. That said it would be quite a problem if he was out weeks because we played roadkill Buffalo and they chose to hurt our guy in their strategic quest for 33rd place in a 32 team league. That I would have a problem with and would hope for some major payback.

This could be our year but we need Austin, unfortunately he will be useless in the playoffs or already on the IR. It’s time to get rid of him. We should trade him plus picks and anyone else for Celebrini, he is the real thing. If not, get someone for him that will be healthy and help our playoff run.
