Auston Matthews' agent questions 'abuse of star players'

The real need is for the nhl to call the damn penalty like its written. No amount of toughness gonna change a cross check to the back in front of the net

You are replying out of context, without having read the discussion string.

Let me summarize.

Yes, rules should be called properly.

BUT -> They aren't going to be, so how to handle that REALITY... now how do we deal with it?

Does multiple 4th line guys, rarely on the ice do it? Maybe a little, but we need people who can react immediately. Yes, it's the wild west of retaliation, it shouldn't be, but that's the way it is, because that's what the NHL wants. Matthews needs to toughen up more, and/or have people on the ice, who can deal with these things.

Jumping up and down, saying the rules need to be called... when it's apparent then won't be, doesn't help a thing.

The fact this is even a point of discussion is kind of embarrassing as a fan of the team.
Why not, it was a penalty and going in to overtime in a short season. Make the call, he was 20 feet away looking right at it. WTF. We would get called for it. This is the same sh!t that explains clearly why we are bottom of the league every year lately in powerplays

OK I don't come on leafs board even as a leaf fan but I had to reply to this. I believe the point is, it doesn't have to get to the point of retaliation by your superstar to get a Whistle. I understand hockey has to uphold this old fashion tough guy persona but come on...they all do it needs to go! As shitty as it sounds op is correct yiu have to protect your stars... It's what every league is doing since... A while.

My point was that everybody has to be protected. Not only star players.

There's always missed calls.

Matthews broke his stick over Chiarot and kneed Andersen.

Part of the game.
Missed calls and neglected calls. That was ignored. He was looking right at the roughing 20 feet away, seen Matthews wincing etc. It was all clear to see. All good. I would want that call every day Leafer

That was a pretty obvious crosscheck to the back on Matthews that was missed on that play.

The determent of Wayne Simmonds in the line-up alone is not going to stop Leafs skilled players from taking additional abuse however.

Perhaps Simmonds and not Thornton needs to ride shotgun on the Matthews line.

Maybe they saw the broken stick cross-check earlier and decided to let them go?

Hard for us to know if it was missed or an even-up non-call.

But you either call it all or none at all.

Not just because Matthews went off the ice pouting.

As per Babs, our PP is our enforcer. Unfortunately that is nullified if the refs do not make the calls. Sigh.

NBA stars get all the calls while NHL stars are neutralized as refs turn a blind eye. Wake up Gary. Stern recognised that the stars drive your league and look at them now.
Them lower back cross checks hurt like f. They jolt the spine and can be excruciating. Simmonds has to not hold back that shot on Chiarot next time! No I’m glad he didn’t crack him when he was down but then he is hunting Matthews low back there. I don’t like it.

We are bottom of the league for penalty calls running years now. Correct you are. Matthews has to drop the gloves. Thats what draws the attention and he has to scream at the ref and cause a scene. He has to fight in order to draw the attention.

They all do it. What about when Sid Crosby hacked Marc Methot's finger literally severing part of it? Is that ok because it's Crosby who was the "assaulter"? There have to harsher penalties on anyone using stick as a weapon all across the board.
That was an epic finger though

Those cross checks are much worse than a slash to the glove hand or shin pads. Guess the cross checks have to be to the neck and face in order to get called.

Mats Sundin didn’t take that crap and he was not a fighter. Mats would break his wrist with a slash and get right in their face. He’d take the penalty but they would be feeling a busted wrist. Mats was way more fiery than Auston

Back breakers man. They will slow a player down for games not minutes. Thats physiotherapist type nagging injury stuff. We wouldn’t get away with it in our paint

Hockey is the same as any other sport,, you f***ing adapt to the times. Even soccer has van their most dangerous plays, hockey should do the same. Be roigh, be tough, hit legally but mf call your penalties.. Doesn't have shit to do with soccer.. Just stop using the rules as guild lines

Don't disagree with you but we gotta be aware that hockey is a contact sport; "keep your head up" is important!!!

That said, refs have gotta enforce the rules; they cannot do "game management"; rules are rules; heck we now have the technology; if refs have to review their calls on the video then so be it. If that means the game gets a bit longer that is fine.

I would argue that the game will get little longer initially; but after players get called for moronic plays and cost their team points/momentum; eventually players will stop making such plays and the longer duration will come down to regular duration.

There is a rule book in hockey and they have to follow it to the "T" and use the same yardstick for all the teams

This year in particular the shortened season is going to result in a lot of tight playoff races, and with teams facing the same opponent much more often than usual the incentive to injure star players has never been higher.

It is a joke how few penalties Matthews draws despite being an absolute beast with the puck and going to all the dirty areas.

And all because he refuses to ever embellish or dive like all the other rats in the league do.
