Auston Matthews' agent questions 'abuse of star players'

This isn't really shocking news. We've been one of the worst teams at drawing penatlies since the big 4 came together and we consistently see dirty teams come in, beat the hell out of us and come away with just 1 or 0 penalties some nights.

If we got the number of opportunities other teams got like Tampa (remember watching a game they had 7 PP's lol) we would have an unstoppable offense.

You could say things like you earn those opportunities but we've been one of the best possession teams and best at managing the puck in the offensive zone yet for a team with the puck all the time we never draw calls.

Can’t really speak to the NFL because I’m a casual fan and never officiated football, but the NBA has the worst officials in pro sports and people constantly complain about them. Their standards vary based on the players involved. That’s ridiculous. A foul on LeBron should be the same as one on the 15th man. A foul on the Lakers/Celtics should be the same as one on the red headed step child in Toronto. Playoffs last year were a prime example - Jayson Tatum frequently committed offensive fouls but would end up shooting free throws vs the Raptors. In the next series vs Miami, Celtics fans were losing their shit when the referees didn’t offer that same bias. It was pretty funny.

Is that the kind of star protection you guys are looking for?

And the NBA literally had corruption and game-fixing issues where one of their officials served jail time (Tim Donaghy) and it wasn’t all that long ago.
Raptors and Tatum is bad ref... But protecting your stars is definitely a priority... That's how you sell, when every other sports does it how is hockey a special case. Are they wrong or is it the nhl that's behind

No, you sell by doing a better job marketing your stars.

...but preferential whistle? No. On the ice, infractions should be the same for and against everyone.

These are two different arguments.

The real need, is people who can react quickly, when something happens to our star players on the ice. Not a loaded 4th line of tough guys, who aren’t there when needed most.
The real need is for the nhl to call the damn penalty like its written. No amount of toughness gonna change a cross check to the back in front of the net

Also part of the marketing strategy is to not lose your superstar for half or whole season cuz of stupid plays like these and oth. ers you see every night. I understand tough, I'm a boxer but man still gotta do rules and do them right. Even boxing protects their stars.

Bro if u don't see the wrong in the nhl then we never seeing the same plane
I didn’t say they’re never wrong, mistakes are inevitable.. but I believe their model of calling the game as objectively as possible regardless of what players are involved is correct... Especially compared to one of the two examples you gave in the NBA.

So the NHL is behind... by not being wrong?

Got it.
It's Evey work place.. You protect your best assets.. It's not a new concept.. By protecting doesn't mean they get the call but they get more eyes on them from ref when they have the puck. The nba and nfl is like that... Even mlb who is one the most old school believer... Hockey is no different

Again you call it the same but you have eyes in your stars when they have the puck. Sorry but losing Sid and many others of your best to injuries from blatent penalties for a full season should have to be a thing. If you have to pay more attention to your superstars then do so. Agian it's normal for almost all work place.

The lack of calls is something that needs to be looked at league wide:

in the last 55 years, we haven’t gone through a period where so little was actually called. This is an era with puck over the glass, automatic penalties for being third man in a scrum. This lack of officiating can allow referees full rein to influence game outcomes, which ultimately affects the quality and transparency of the game. The growth of the game has evened out the playing field and the discrepancy between the best and worst players is the smallest it’s ever been. A power play has become the deciding factor in many games and having a ref become a meme on the Internet isn’t exactly reassuring. Then there’s the player safety aspect - it’s great that concussions are being talked about (and handled poorly) but brain injuries are just one type that can have debilitating effects. Keeping the sport dangerous means more players that will suffer lifelong back issues and over reliance on pain meds. Great.

How is better compared to nba and nfl? Cuz as a fan I like watching the best players play.

You must think you tough with a lacross pic thinking you insultin people by using ballet, what else you got tough guy... Any more hockey tough lingo you want to throw out..
why so triggered ?

and the pic is of my son blowing by a long pole when he was at university that i used as my av when i first joined a decade ago and never bothered changing

Agreed. Cross checking is technically illegal, but it happens crazy often and they basically never call it. What’s the point of having an NHL rulebook if it does not remotely reflect the way the refs actually call the game?

The final cross check by Chiarot especially was really over the top/brutal. If that’s not a cross checking penalty, what is?

The cross-checking rule adds in 'at the discretion of the Referee based on the severity of the contact' so it doesn't even matter what the rule book says, the refs can do whatever they want based on this wording.

Then you have the checking from behind wording that also considers cross-checking as a check from behind which is supposed to be a major penalty. Obviously they would never call this but it should not be worded the way it is.

Chiarot should have been called for cross checking regardless of who he was hitting, Matthews, McDavid, Simmonds, Reaves.

Call penalties when they occur and they’ll naturally protect all players.

The trigger is the comment at certain profession or sport/competition that just cuz you deem is to be weak/ soft for you to then use it to belittle others as part of your proof as being tough is why I made my comment. This ballet shiet that you seem to think makes you more of a man then another is why I'm calling you out. Hope that answer ya triggerness

The point is he shouldn't have to be "nasty enough" it should of been called after the first one and especially after the 2nd. Also his stick broke what u want him to do Marty him across the head? I'm sorry but if I know you ain't tough how are you gonna affect me. You want Mathews to be more nasty but how? He showed more physicality that game then probably 99% of his. But he isn't a nasty kid, can't change that.

I just want Matthews to be hungry to dominate and do everything within his powers to compete. You can never count on officiating and complaining about game management doesn't fly.

Look at Nathan Mackinnon here in the playoffs when things get chippy. Nothing wrong with this response. Gets ito the scrum, gets the stick up on a guy's face, starts a fight. Wins the fight. Standard stuff.

Yes but that game Auston was hitting people...he was pretty aggressive and I'm sure that's part of his offseason to do list. Believe I want that too.... He would be such a beast but i think the Mexican fighter side of is gonna stay dormant but agian it looks like he knows what part of his game he is missing

I thought the Weber crosscheck was fine but that second Chiarot crosscheck (third in a row) on Matthews should have been called.

That being said, Matthews playing with some snarl is great for his development and he should expect guys to push his buttons like Chiarot was. We're witnessing AM34's evolution into a 200 ft, complete franchise player.

At the end of the day I think a certain amount of old school prison rule still apply in the game, so rather than stand out like someone who can be a target, serve notice you’re not to be messed with. But it’s a work in progress and we shall see how his game matures.

your way to agitated over a nothing comment , maybe your trying to get a rise out of me or maybe your just reading too much into my post but either way i couldn't give a crap

and as far as ballet goes , they have to be extremely talented and dedicated to perform at the highest level but that doesn't change the fact that it's a non contact art
Yes but why use it as a derogatory thing towards other is my point.. Trust Contact sports doesn't make you automatically tough and the belief that hockey players needs to man up is outdated and needs to change.

And he tried it last game but his stick broke... I've played the real prison game and believe me I know you need to hit first to make your mark. It's something I want him to do too just fight and let everyone see how strong he is imeven if he can't fight
