I think he will finisher somewhere in the range of 65-70. But not 76. No shot.

No shot? I get thinking it will be tough to do but how do you suppose he has no shot with 51 in 54 and 37 in his last 33 games?

Yup. Didn’t add that because I knew it would get peoples undies in a bunch.

The scoring era and “why just ES?” arguments will fly lol

Some people can’t stomach that matthews is the best goal scorer in a long time…and could be the best ever one day
I think most people agree that Matthews is the best goal scorer in a long time. But what's annoying is the people that are overly confident that he's got a great shot at being the GOAT.

Guy will be 27 next season and will still be 6 rockets back of Ovechkin.

Because he's gonna hit a slump. It's just gonna happen. I think it is much more likely that he hits a slump then keeping this pace up to the end of the season.

There is also a chance for injury or suspension that could also f*** him up. Even missing 2-3 games would be enough.

So which do you think it more likely? A healthy Matthews playing the rest of the season without interruption scoring on this torrid pace right up to the end?

Or Matthews going on small slump here or there especially when teams tend to tighten up defensively in the final 20 games of the season as they try to make the playoffs?

I think the later is much more likely.

Hes the greatest goal scorer we have seen since Ovechkin, why wouldn't some people be confident in that ? What's annoying is people telling us we can't even discuss it, until it is actually done.

Don't agree with your point about the powerplay time.
You do not agree about my point that: PP time can push the scoring among the top player that play on the first unit of the PP at similar level (or not , it depends)

I thought I wrote the most trivial non-controversial point that I could.

Not sure about the goal projections, could be close Hyman, 29 games lefts, 34+34/52*29=53, Crosby 48 I think.

They will not play all the possible game so your pushing it down a bit can be reasonable, if you look at the Top 20 scorer in goal total currently what is their average gpg to make it easier in that regard, as they have all different amount of upcoming games.

They scored at a .574 goal per game pace this year, .515 in 2007-2008, 11.5% higher this season

I don’t think any of us expect him to keep up this pace.

However, we didn’t expect him to have this pace multiple times in his career either

He does have a shot at being the GOAT goal scorer. Absolutely he does.

The fact he's smashing all of the Leaf's scoring records talks about the sad state of affairs of previous Leaf talent. Don't get me wrong, he's f***ing amazing...but he's going to surpass Sundin likely next season already.
If you look through any of the Original 6 lists there really isn't many players he isn't quickly eclipsing.

The other part of that is very few players are career Leafs.

He doesn't even have to be a career Leaf. He will top Leaf scoring records before this current contract is up. He could peace out of TO after this contract is done. Be in his early 30's and have plenty of runway left to excel someplace else.

The next 8 games feature Vegas twice, Boston twice, Colorado and NYR. How he comes out of those 8 will tell the tale of how good his chance is at 70.

his career splits against those teams average those 6 games out to be 4 goals

historically matthews is very strong against vegas and colorado... very weak against NYR and boston is sort of middle of the pack.

I know the Leafs get a lot of hate on this board but if you're a non-Leafs fan looking in, you still gotta admire what this guy is doing.

Similar to when McDavid is just destroying the league, Karlsson's runs with Ottawa, Ovechkin's goal scoring, Crosby's production... or even Price's amazing goaltending displays.

Some things you just appreciate as a sports fan.
