Fair, but matthews is also outpacing him by 12 goals

I don't think it's unfair to say this season stacks up very well against that season, if not better

I mean it is objectively better compared to the rest of the league, after the same amount of games, or goals.

Ovechkin scored his 50th, 51st and 52nd goal in his 67th game.

Matthews now with 51 in 54 (nhl.com hasn’t added his two goals yet)

Unless he has an unusually bad finish to the season this will be one for the ages.

Goalscoring looks pretty close compared to scoring in those seasons, but Ovi did it "alone" 112 points and 65 goals where the second guy on the team had 69 points.

Matthews is one of the most stacked teams offensively and will struggle to beat Ovechkin's point total this year in a higher scoring season. Will very likely beat 65 goals, but wouldnt say Matthews season is better considering how hard Ovi Carried the Capitals vs Matthews where they have several guys doing the work.

Really hoping he stays healthy the rest of the season, because if he does 70 goals is looking very likely, and that would be a special milestone that is truly rare in the NHL.

Matthews also plays an elite two-way game and doesn’t get to spend a quarter of his ice time blasting one-timers repeatedly on the powerplay, or hovering by his own blue line waiting for a breakout pass 24/7 at even strength.

Overall Ovechkin was the better offensive threat, Matthews is the better goal scorer with a much better two-way game.

Ovi also played 5:37 a game on the PP in 2007-2008
Matthews is playing 3:16 a game on the PP this season

Projecting that over 82 games would mean Ovechkin spent a good 3 hours and 12 minutes more on the PP than Matthews would this season if the pace stays the same.

I think keeping one player on the PP for 3 hours more than another probably helps their stats a lot.

Matthews is a much better even-strength scorer than Ovechkin was but Ovechkin got significantly more PP time than nearly everyone else in the league during his prime.

Since he entered the league, Ovechkin played 1300 more minutes on the PP than number 2 Crosby.

I try to watch as much as I can, but I will say in recent years, the Leafs have entered the territory similar to the Raptors in the Derozan/Lowry era in Toronto, where nothing really matters until the playoffs. So, if I miss the occasional game, I don't feel bad, or try to schedule so I can watch each game. Right now with Matthews's heater, every game feels like a must watch because he's chasing something so unique (70+).

Like, as of right now, he just needs to stay healthy, and score at the pace he has over the past 5 years for the remaining games.

This guy is insane. I know that scoring is way up and nostalgia might be preventing me from giving him the nod against OV, peak vs. peak goalscoring-wise, but what he's doing has to at least be comparable (though I still think peak OV is one of the best players ever). I mean, Matthews is pacing for almost 75+ goals. This season could end up alongside the likes of OV in 07-08, Hull in 90-91, Lemieux in 88-89, Esposito in 70-71 and Gretzky in 83-84.

No no no.

Someone has argued with me, and I think they might be onto something with it, that for offensive players, more power play time is actually detrimental to scoring.

So you see, the league is once again helping the Leafs by not allowing their best players to slog through too much power play time and therefore giving them an advantage in scoring!

It's really big brain stuff the league is pulling here to help the Maple Laffs.

People make the wildest argument.

Does more PP make you score less? You won't get goals taken away. I can buy that maybe your pace drops overtime.. but you won't lose goals so more is always better.

I mean peak goal scoring ability wise I think Matthews is going to end up with a better season than Ovi. Ovi just seemingly does it year in and year out without ever getting hurt. Just a consistent machine.

I want to see 80!

Not a better even strength scorer than prime Ovi. In 07-08 Ovi had 75 even strength points 9 ahead of second Malkin.

If you look at the top even strength point seasons after the lockout you find there are a lot of seasons around 2020 +/- 2-3 seasons as scoring is up. The best even strength seasons around Ovi's prime are.

09/10 H. Sedin 83
07/08 Ovechkin 75 (tied 14th after lockout)
11/12 Malkin 75
09/10 Ovechkin 73
09/10 Crosby 72
05/06 Thornton 72

Ovechkin in his prime tilted the ice in on even strength. If you watch some hockey in Ovi's first years in the league you will see he tilted the ice way more than Matthews are. Still Matthews is just as good as a goalscorer and I think this season matches up well goalscoring wise vs Ovechkin, but I dont think Matthews is as dominant in his overall impact on the ice where Ovi carried his team. So rocket wise Matthews season might be better, but in a Hart vote I would go Ovi.
