It's still in the realm of possibility that Matthews can score 50 goals in 50 games for the second time in his career. (This would be an "unofficial" version).

Including tonight's game (still in progress), he has 44 goals over the past 45 (personal - not team) games. Six goals over his next five games would get him there.

Another way to look at it - he has 37 goals over the past 33 games. 13 goals in the next 17 games would also work.

I wouldn't bet on it - but there's a non-trivial possibility.

I mean either of those things seem like a 50/50 for a player with 51 goals in 54 games and 37 in his last 33 😂

Ovechkin managed 65 goals back in 07/08 when league was averaging 2.78 goals per game

For this season, it's 3.12 goals per game
If you looked at hockey reference season average, they add the winning goals of a shootout, which is counterintuitive a bit, at least for people that will tend to look at them to have a feel for the scoring environment.

07/08 was a bit lower at 2.72, this year around 3.11 (3v3 reduce the amount of game that goes to shutout I could imagine)

but 07/08 was a 4.28 powerplay a game versus 3.12 this year, which can push the scoring among the top player that play on the first unit of the PP at similar level (or not , it depends).

How many 60 in 60 have there been?

"Official" 60 in 60 (ie from the team's 1st through 60th games):
- Gretzky - 1982, 1984, 1986
- Lemieux - 1989
- Hull - 1991
- Selanne - 1993

"Unofficial" 60 in 60 (ie not starting from the team's first game and/or the player missed games):
- Esposito - 1971
- Kurri - 1985
- Hull - 1992
- Lemieux - 1993
- Lemieux - 1996

So What's the pace now? coming into tonight, it was either 74, or 75 depending on you looked, then he scored 2 more tonight so it must have gone up.
