Ovechkin is in this league. Right now

He’s been in the league for the last 20 years

Matthew’s has no competition, every year it’s a new player having a career goal scoring year battling with Matthews, but Matthews is there every year.

If he played close to full season in years 2 and 3, he’d have 8 straight years of 40 goals to start his career, with a high of 60 that he’s challenging this year

There’s just not anyone like him in the league for the past 8 seasons
Ovechkin literally outscored him last year

I mean, at least we don’t have to watch Stutzle swimming down the ice every night, and sens rookies doing beer league bullshit

I’d probably stop watching if I had to put up with that garbage 3 times a week. And losing more games than we win with only $20k cap space? Ya, no thank you

Lmao I’ll never get tired of reading that thread :laugh::laugh:

Matthew’s is such a stud

Goalies are horrible now, too
Wellllllll...........

I can't get on board with this either.

My point is only that if your team sucks it's nice to watch what Matthews is doing. Doesn't mean he's the greatest player or anything, it's just that at least you have that to watch.

I wouldn't talk down like that to Sens fans. They have always drafted well and had to watch those players leave because they don't have MLSE money to throw around.

All I'm saying is that Matthews is a joy to behold. That's all.

Now on pace for 71.5 goals in 81 games.

It's certainly more likely he misses 70 than makes it, but he has a legit shot. Would be the first player to do so in over 30 years! Only 8 guys have done it ever:

- Gretzky, Lemieux, Hull, Kurri, Nichols, Mogilny and Teemu all did it (some multiple times) between 1981/82 and 1992/93. This was the NHL's highest scoring era, in all of those years teams averaged between 3.46 and 4.01 goals/game (averaging ~3.75 goals/game overall)

- The only player to do it outside this crazy high scoring era was Espo, who did it in 1970/71, when NHL teams averaged 3.12 goals/game

This season teams are averaging 3.09 goals/game, so a touch lower than even Espo's 70 goal season, and ~20% lower than the 80s/early 90s, when every other 70 goal season happened. A 20% difference in scoring is a lot, a 70 goal season today is like an 84 goal season in that era. 70 in this era is absurd, would be truly incredible to see him reach that mark.

It’s even lower than 3.09 because that includes shootout goals, but still not a huge difference either way. I sure hope he reaches it, or at the very least surpasses 65.

Five hat tricks?!?! Who does he think he is, Patrick Laine?!?!

…wait.. :help:

Anyways, did anyone actually think he would put up these kind of numbers?? This is insane!
I mean in 2 of the 3 seasons before this he had .78 GPG or higher so being the Rocket favourite this year was never in doubt.

We will have to see if he continues to score at these rates well into his 30s like Ovi, but I find all the different ways Matthews scores super impressive. He is just a money finisher. Scores from everywhere.

I don’t believe SO goals are counted as goals scored.

EDIT: I guess they do count towards team totals.

Has he ever had a 3-assist game?

This is the ultimate level of pure haters grasping at straws to criticize the guy.

"Oh yeah, Phelps won six golds at the Olympics that year, well how many six silver Olympics does the guy have?"

Also, he's had 9 games with 3-assists, not that it matters. Ovi has 16. Gretzky had 224 lol.
