This USA - Slovak game looks very well attended on TV to me.

In Russia, Sweden, Finland, etc... The building would be EMPTY!

I agree with you on this, it seems like more people went to the USA slovakia game, then the canada game lol.

5,100 fans turned out in Regina today to watch the Sweden vs Czech game today as well. That's respectable support to watch 2 foreign teams duke it out in a small market like Regina.

4900 Pro-Austrian fans showed up to see the Russia / Austria game as well.

I thought it was a decent crowd, the game was much louder than the Czech / Sweden game - but that one got kind of dull very quickly.

Boxing Day + -34 degrees + Poor Road Conditions + Latvian Opponent = No Surprise.

Kinda surprised nobody else mentioned this.

For the wild traffic to get out there I was still shocked to see empty seats. With Latvia and the terrible weather to have this one paid up for but not fully attended isnt a shock. Now the New Years game should be totally packed if that isnt I'd be disappointed.

Regardless Sask crowds sit on their hands, I've heard louder Jr. A Playoff games then what that crowd put out there. That was the part that was embarrassing.

What is so damn embarrassing about it?

It is Christmas time after all. Perhaps people have better things to spend their money on?

You know this tournament is held the same time each year, right? It was sold out all over Canada in the past.

Recession that bad out there?

And about the hats. Throwing hat's on the ice in a double digit blowout? Not kosher....

I'm going to avoid this thread from now on. Too much SK hate.

Hate?

No, concern.

Then there's no excuse. Get off your ***** going forward.

ever experienced 34 below and bad roads? has the team recently had even close to as soft an opponent, the day after xmas? SK fans saw the SIXTEEN to nothing coming. but i suppose you've told the fans out there what to do, so they'd better listen up going forward.

i expected far weaker crowds for those Regina games - like has been said before, you'd have a crowd of 500 at some of those "other pool" tilts in other locales. support is just fine.

Last year's tournament was held in Ottawa and the arenas were packed despite terrible weather, even for Canada's 15-0 thumping of Kazakhstan. It's also worth mentioning that the ScotiaBank Place is well outside the city of Ottawa and is pretty much an hour drive away from my part of the city.

Really?, they can't even sell out the first game of the tourney.

I think they had something like 12500 people in a 15000 seated building.

Embarrassing as hell:shakehead:shakehead

...........................................................................

I remember last year, the fans were absolutely going CRAZY for the WJC, even the slovakia/usa game had 12000+ fans.

12,000 fans at the Slovakia/USA game today. Anyways I also heard the game was sold out of tickets, some didn't make it. It was funny though because I drove with my friends, we left an hour before, but we were still going to be late for like half the first period. A bunch of people started getting out of vehicles and jumping a short fence to get to the game on time, it was a far walk for how cold it was, I sprinted the whole way hahah and just made it for when Canada was coming onto the ice.

I was pleasantly surprised at the crowd for that game. I found myself cheering on Austria from the get-go.

I thought that Canada loved hockey and would sell out every game. Wasn't that the point of having this in Canada 90% of the time, now?

According to others, this game was sold out. People just did not show up. So as long as the IIHF gets their money, they are happy.

Selling out a game is one thing. The game is liekly considered a sellout thanks to the packs that were sold.

Getting them to show up for this game, that's a different matter.

That is probably true, but if we want Europeans to care this tournament, it should be held in Europe too, not in Canada all the time. Of course it should be held in Canada most of the time, but not in every year. Just imagine how big World Juniors would be in Sweden at the moment?

When World Juniors were in Finland at 2005, the atmosphere was great as you can see :).

And when Finland won home tournamet in 1998, it was just amazing, good times.

So your saying they are liars? How would that benefit TSN?

TSN does not need to lie to make Canada "look better than it actaully is". Our attendance records at this tournament speak for themselves.

I am saying the government overspent to get this tournament, and if they are going to call a clear non sell out, a sell out, then they are papering the crowd to make it seem justifiable. I don't by any of these excuses that it was cold, or it was the entrances to the building, or whatever...that is BS.

And TSN absolutely has a reason to make the building look full, they make a lot of money off of this tournament, and the more hype around it the better for them.

This tournament hasn't had a non sell out game for Canada in over a decade, it doesn't matter what other countries would do, the only comparison that matters is to the rest of the country.

Ridiculous excuses. What is the weather on a normal December day in Saskatchewan?

As for the opponent, is this the first time Canada has played a weaker team in the last decade or so? Do you think people in Ottawa, Halifax, Vancouver or Winnipeg didn't KNOW that Canada was better than some of these teams? They still showed up and supported the team.

Yes, of course, Canada has never played a weaker team, and people from Saskatoon knew it would be 16-0.

Yadda yadda yadda -34 and bad roads blah blah blah

First Canada game at home where the building wasn't full in a long ass time...congrats Saskatoon.

I suspect that a lot of the empty seats were purchased by businesses. Maybe with the weather being poor and it being boxing day, no one could use them or didn't care to. Team Canada v.s. Latvia isn't why most people buy these packages. I'm purely speculating of course, but I could see that happening quite easily.

Most of Saskatchewan also got **** on with tons of snow over the past few days.

I drove in for the games in Regina, but there were 6 cars in the ditch on my way.

Yep, getting to Scotia Bank is a pain in the ass. I know my cousin was worried because of the transit strike as well, but I can't remember if that was still going on at that time. I don't think it was. But then again, it was pretty up in the air if Canada would be Kazakhstan. :sarcasm:

According to TSN and others, there was just under 13,000 tickets sold. That isn't a sell out.
