It’s not most but it is a big chunk of the team that has his fingerprints on it. A third (8/24 players) of this team heading into the playoff is his doing. Biggest pieces left that were pure Dubas moves are our 2C, 1LW, and our 1/2LD.

Matthews (Lou)
Marner (Hunter/Dubas)
Nylander (Nonis/Shanahan)
Tavares (Dubas)
Knies (Dubas)
McMann (Dubas)
Domi (Treliving)
Holmberg (Dubas)
Robertson (Dubas)
Laughton (Treliving)
Lorentz (Treliving)
Jarnkrok (Dubas)
Kampf (Dubas)
Pacioretty (Treliving)

Rielly (Burke)
Tanev (Treliving)
McCabe (Dubas)
Carlo (Treliving)
Ekman-Larsson (Treliving)
Benoit (Treliving)
Myers (Treliving)
*Hakanpaa (Treliving)

Stolarz (Treliving)
Woll (Lou)

*11 (Hakanpaa is still a massive question mark so more like 10) players are pure Treliving moves. This includes our 1G and most of the defence including our 1RD and 2RD. The head coach is also all Treliving.

Lou leaves behind our 1C, 1RW, and 2G. Nonis, but really Shanahan given the story around the 2014 draft, drafted Nylander, and Burke drafted Rielly.
There is an article from two days ago that talked about how Dubas was going to pass on Knies (he was going to trade down), but Wes Clark put his foot down.

What makes you say this? Did you know that over 50% of teams that sweep their opponent go on to lose in the following round? Rust/momentum is a serious factor in the NHL.
I didn’t know that but it makes sense, teams get on a roll and play out of their minds. Maybe similar to a video game rolling along much better than starting and stopping.

Are you suggesting the Leafs aren't playing a style that is focussed on defensive responsibility that traditionally has lead to more success in the playoffs? Our defence has a true shutdown pair in Tanev and McCabe. Carlo is a huge defenceman that has added size and experience to the defence. OEL and Rielly have playoff experience, and even Benoit has been solid. To suggest this defence isn't better and more prepared for the playoffs is wrong. The team isn't playing the high-risk, high flying hockey that was easily shut down in the past. That style, without the defensive awareness, doesn't often lead to success.
I just think he meant Col for sure did not play a heavy north/south.

TB doesn't really play that way either.

St Louis, Vegas for sure did

This is a good breakdown. Really shows that it can take a while to find the right mix of players.

Bottom line is if we see playoff success this year, it probably continues to be a Dubas/Tre hybrid team. And there's no need to exaggerate what one of them has done, or minimize what the other has done, just to suit a narrative.
This statement should be pinned to the top of the forum. The second sentence is very well said.

I wouldn't call myself a Dubas fan or anything...but he still gets credit for picking Knies. He listened to his guy at the end of the day.

I imagined Dubas as a guy who can be convinced, he wasn't too rigid as was illustrated by his evolution in philosophy. Too bad the RFA contracts handcuffed him. I wonder if covid hadn't hit and the cap not frozen if he would have been able to set it straight. I suspect he wanted to trade one of Nylande or Marner, we will know obviously.

As it were I am quite concerned about McCabe being available for Game 1. His presence is a big deal and provides one of the best shut down pairs in the league, Let's hope OEL and him are available though in my experiences of watching most teams they rally around each other and play a committed defensive game when they know they don't have as much room for error.

I think I could look at it all day and not get it.
Not sure what the connection is between Matthews and the PWHL?

The title above the Matthews photo is "Montreal Canadiens" but the story is about the Leafs.

But that's my fault for not editing out the PWHL story from the screen shot to make it clearer.

I just fear they won’t have enough gas left in the tank and be too banged up by the time they would reach the finals. I believe this team benefits from the rest in the long run.

Currently on a 5 game losing streak against the Sens, winning 4 of the next 7 is a tall order, even though we have proven to be playoff juggernauts.

This just means we’re due for some wins against them. Do not fear the Sens my friend, save all that fear for round 2. Though truthfully I don’t fear anyone against a healthy Leafs squad.

What am I missing here? If Tampa wins their 2 remaining games they’re tied in points but will have less regular season wins? Didn’t we already clinch the division?

I agree with you totally on the bolded. I think we disagree in that our defence has a better opportunity to display these qualities in the playoffs given our personnel and style of play.
I hope so, but many are not things that this personnel and system have done better at thus far. We're really going to have to hope that Carlo can improve the PK especially.
We haven't had as good a shutdown pair as Tanev and McCabe in the Matthews-Marner era. They are going to log a lot of minutes.
I love both of these players and what they've done this season, but I don't know that that's true. I won't get into some of the more controversial examples, but at the very least Muzzin-Brodie is comparable.
We haven't had a No. 3 as good as Carlo.
We've had better #3s than Carlo. Brodie and McCabe have both spent time as our #3s. Carlo is actually our #4 though, and he probably is the best #4 we've had. But that's really the only number that's gotten better and a few have gotten worse.
OEL has Stanley Cup experience as our fourth and we hope we see playoff Rielly this year. Benoit at the very least brings physicality to the defence.
This 3rd pairing is my biggest concern in terms of the defensemen. Benoit has really struggled this season, and physicality is nice and all, but it has to accomplish something to be worth something. OEL brings some experience and much needed offensive attributes to the defense, but his defensive struggles have kind of flown under the radar. I'm hoping that dropping him down to #5 will help him, but putting him with Benoit also forces him to his off side, which he has not done well with. These two also take a lot of bad penalties.

And it gets brushed off, but the defensive and PKing proficiency in our forward depth has really dropped off over the past couple years. It makes a difference. And I know people won't want to admit it, but for whatever faults you believe he had, Holl was a good PKer.
I think we both agree that goaltending is going to determine how well we do, but I think Woll and Stolarz would agree that the defence has been playing extremely well in front of them allowing them to play to their potential.
A lot always comes down to goaltending. On both sides. This season has been a lot of Stolarz and Woll covering up for defensive mistakes. If they can continue it in the playoffs, we should be okay. If not, we're in some trouble.
