It’s easy to forget that the Atlanta Flames were NOT perennial bottom-dwellers like other expansion teams from that era. They made the playoffs in six out of their eight seasons of existence—and even though they never won a playoff round, they were definitely not an easy opponent. That track record of performance set them up for success following their relocation to Calgary: it’s no coincidence that they had that great run to the semifinals in their first year in Calgary, with a core group of players who were all there from before in Atlanta: Nilsson, Chouinard, Plett, Vail, Reinhart, MacMillan, Clement, Riggin & Lemelin, et al.
