Unless I missed it, Turcotte wasn't mentioned. There were some questions posed here and in the Yannetti thread about him but weren't asked, which is odd for the org's 2nd highest draft pick in the last decade or so.

OK well let me hopefully de-escalate your concern.

The decision to omit Alex Turcotte from both conversations was entirely mine.

While I am a team employee... the company is divided into hockey operations and business operations
(this is overly simplified but basically true) and I fall squarely on the "Business Operations" side.

I have to request opportunities to talk to these guys and I try to be mindful of their time. I don't like feeling like I'm wasting it or wasting an opportunity so I'm loathe to ask questions that I either think won't get a decent answer or that I feel will put them in an awkward situation.

Alex Turcotte has suffered injuries. Everybody knows this.

Alex Turcotte was scheduled to participate in development camp. He showed up and was given a physical like everybody else and It was decided that he shouldn't.

Beyond that information I don't know anything more than you guys and while I am ALSO curious about what his status is... I can tell you that the answer would probably have been "his status is unavailable"

My job isn't to go hounding other team employees for every bit of info that I wish I had and believe me I wish I had plenty that they're not comfortable sharing.

I really do wish I could be an independent seeker of all things truth when it comes to the LA Kings... but that's not the gig I signed up for. I try to do my best to straddle the line between passionate irrational fan and mouthpiece for the organization and I can honestly tell you that the number of times I have ever been "censored" or even steered away from specific topics or information is less than 5 and that goes back to the 2014-15 season.

It's also way less interesting than you might think.



SO... that's a lot of words to basically say "Sorry. It's not a conspiracy it's just me being overly cautious... which is probably what happened with Turcotte at Development Camp"

Thanks for the insight. I understand your position and respect your decision not to pry. But considering you already knew they would be cagey about Turcotte is also another indicator that the org is tight-lipped around certain topics. I'm mostly curious what their plan and expectations are for him in the season ahead, and how he's dealing with everything. Unfortunately, the independent media who doesn't have to worry about straddling the line is nonexistent at the moment.

They're not tight-lipped about Turcotte... they're tight-lipped about everything.

I guess that's one of those things that informed my decision that I forget other people aren't aware of.


I started out independent, then was made a freelance contributor and am now a fully fledged team employee. It's an evolving relationship and profession.

I’ve just personally accepted that Turcotte is f***ed. Much like how Vilardi was… until he wasn’t. You can’t change it. Sucks the Kings have had the bad luck of 2 top 10 picks have serious health issues. After the Yanetti interview I do get the sense they learn from mistakes. Expensive lesson to learn. Probably adds another metric into when drafting a guy. Value upon evaluation of talent can be there but maybe they will start adding the “is the juice worth the squeeze aspect.”

Thanks for how you phrased the question about QB’s stick length. It was helpful for me to hear Stoll’s in depth discussion about how a player’s mix of equipment is absolutely critical while also being completely custom to the individual. And how it changes over the course of time.

As a QB fan, it made me feel better about my faith in the player. And I think you are good at finding a political way to ask hard questions of team, while being on the payroll. Much better than the guys who gain access by being season tickets holders with their own platforms.

You’re in a unique spot where you have guaranteed access and a formal place in the org. And you’ve started to leverage your presence in the fan community to strengthen engagement. I think that provides a unique opportunity to bring insight to the fan base by finding the best way to ask the uncomfortable questions the fans are discussing.

Especially those who don’t automatically drink the kool aid.

Haven't been able to listen yet. In the meantime, regarding QBs stick, did we get an answer as to whether he is now using a bit longer one or is it the same exact size?

No direct answer was given about making it longer. From what I took away, the shape of the blade is being tinkered with. The length isn’t changing because of his hunched over skating stride and the hands are lower down because of that.

Seems like an obvious misalignment due to growing frame versus how hockey sticks need to be manufactured. My guess the org is handling this as a short term thing that is part of being a growing boy who is already a physical freak.

I think it's fair to say they're well aware that equipment plays a role in success.

At an infinitely lower level in terms of both the hockey and the professionalism I once tried to straddle that line and it was firstly nearly impossible and secondly I wasn’t very good at it. So I sort of understand the difficulty you face (although I did it for just £10 per article, so my risk was low) and you become very aware that if you get the balancing act wrong (which I did frequently) it just makes it harder to do as you go forward. You also understand very quickly what types of questions will get you the answers you want and which ones won’t, which was about the only thing I got right.

I really cannot emphasize enough how bad I was at it and how difficult I found it. It completely ended my ambitions of going into journalism, leaving me fully appreciating those that can actually do it successfully. I was also relieved that I didn’t need to learn shorthand, which was the next step for me at the time. Those were the days, carrying around a tape recorder the size of a building brick, with a wired microphone the size of a cucumber 😂

Interesting Stolly picked Fagemo as the one who stood out to him in dev camp and will be knocking on door for roster spot (his words).. I wonder where he wouldve put him in the pecking order with the other 3 wings that are chasing the last open spot (Vilardi, Kupari, Andersson)
 
Fagemo gets better every season and is a right handed one timing machine. Great to hear that he was scoring well at even strength as Frk was the power play specialist in Ontario. Hopefully, Fagemo gets that time with Tynan. Arty, Fagemo and Chromiak are our legit goal scoring hopefuls. Hell, we hope just one pans out. Two or all three would be a dream scenario.

I was not too excited or hopeful, with this new draft crop, but after hearing a few reports and Stoll's comments.
Sounds like Wright can really skate...and 6'8" Jack Sparkes, sounds a little reassuring he can skate.
And that Jack Hughes is a smart player that has high skill and can make plays. Scouting reports said his shot
needed to be better...but a few at camp said his shot was very good. I also would say - 16 pts as a 17/18 yr old Freshman, 2nd youngest in college hockey, is pretty damn good. Consider Turcotte had 26 pts his freshman year, but was basically a year older. If Hughes can add some size and strngth and get to 30 pts this year, would be stellar. McKenzie and some others had him what? 25-40 ranked?

I honestly like that several are in college and can marinate there. The Kings don't need another 3-4 players entering the pros / AHL in the next 1-2 years, anyway. Chromiak, Lee, Helenius and Ward are all going to have roles this year. Let Hughes,Connors, Wright and Sparkes get a few years of college play first.
Then there's Booth and Lawrence in juniors....and Salin gettng in a few more seasions in Liiga.

I honestly like that Booth had 2 ankle injuries, Salin had an injury and Lawrence missed 2 years, as if they
were healthy and played to their potential the last 1+ year, they may have had better showings, stats.
and all may have gone higher and not around where they were selected. All picks after round 2 have warts or
shortcomings. Why not find players that have less shortcomings, that had injuries and possible higher potential?

Stoll seems kind of high on Laferriere and Lee. I feel a little reassured about QB and his stick.
If they detect anything detrimental, they will intervene. Kid is stll 19. Hard to believe...yet that changes
next month...turning 20.

seems like Fagemo could be the next big thing....at least in making the team soon and having some impact.
I feel he's a can't miss....but just don't know the ceiling. TMac does not throw out high level praise and said last
year "Fagemo is a helluva player" That is something that stays with me.

Jim Hiller would be an interesting guest to have on, maybe get his perspective of what he saw with the Kings' PP and what they can do to make it better, with breakouts/zone entries, positioning, the importance of having a one-timer setup as an option on each side of the ice, setting up down low versus the high point, high-slot tips versus a net front screen, having 4F and 1D or a traditional 3F and 2D, etc.

Hiller also got to play with Blake and Luc in 1992-93, so maybe he can share some fun stories about his time here.

Thats kinda the thing Im getting too. Straddling the lines between being a fan and being a representative is understandable. But I think its a question worth asking even though it might at worst give an awkward answer. Turcotte isn't some random draft pick. If anything he should be a player that everyone should have a better understanding about.
