ATD2025 Draft Thread

Torpedo Ust-Kamenogorsk selects the best goaltender remaining on the board in Charlie Gardiner, G.

This pick is dedicated to an old friend of mine in Charlie's son Bob Gardiner, who passed away over the weekend at the age of 95. Pictured is him with his Dad as a two-year-old.

Such an awesome photo. I'm sorry to hear about the passing of Bob. 95 years is a long time to have lived at least. I'm sure he had many wonderful stories growing up around the game from that period onward.

Well, my list got f***ing obliterated. Moreso than any other ATD from what I recall.

But I'll still happily take a warrior who is tough as nails, strong on both sides of the puck, a right-handed shot, can play both special teams units, and has an absolute cannon from the point. In many ways, he's a complete package on D and a guy who all considered should probably go a bit higher. I suppose the lack of Norris votes hurts him a bit, but I can safely say as a guy who watched him extensively throughout his career, this is the kind of player you go to war with.

Baltimore selects the first-ballot HOFer..Shea Weber, D

Sorta wished I traded down this pick earlier since I want two wingers on the board right now that I think would still be there in the 120s but maybe not in the 130s lol

I'll pick the one who I don't think is as good but who I haven't picked before and brings the size and strength I want to Henri's line (I loved my Bloomfield Hills team which will probably always be the favorite team I built in one of these things but the one thing was that my forward lines were a bit too small even if not soft) and reunites with old teammate Hull as well, Brendan Shanahan, LW, we'll just make sure Seattle has a strict hide yo' wife, don't f*** around policy

Gallifrey picks "the tank" LW Vladimir Krutov.

This allows us to form KSM line, where Sakic is significant upgrade to the undrafted Soviet. Considering how well the original line did we feel confident that our 1st line will get the job done. (They will also have familiar presense on blueline in Vasiliev for additional chemistry points + Kelly for the stud 1D to replace Fetisov)

Mahovlich drops to 2nd line and brings big scoring threat for that line.

I enjoyed going back and reading on this player (he'll also give me another player to research after Clapper), as you can tell he was a high IQ player, who probably stayed on the ice more than any ATD level defensemen, ever. 95 PIM's in 14 seasons (775 games) is absurdly low, cited as the lowest mark of all time. His ability to play in all situations, and reputation as a 2 way player makes it easier to find a partner for, and the contemporary praise for his game is well documented in the bios below by 70's and TDMM.

Bill Quackenbush, D

More great player analysis by the HOF journalist, Baz O'Meara, compares his style to that of Frank Nighbor of all people. Says he is generally recognized (1949) as the best Dman in hockey and dispels any notion of Quack being soft.

Maybe this is too off-topic for the ATD thread, but do you (or does anyone) have any sense of how Quackenbush performed in the playoffs? I feel like I know virtually nothing about how he performed in the postseason.

I haven't looked specifically at him in any depth yet, but I'll definitely take a peek at the postseason write ups and see what I can find.

Sorry for a bit of wait here. Hogsmeade has a blank canvas here since my starting lineup is set, so it's as good a time as any to cash in on taking a goalie. Georges Vezina is comfortably ahead of the next best available, so he's going to look just fine with the Lunas.

Then, I was going to take best winger available here, but I missed the run on wingers and my draft board was just decimated. So, I'll pivot and anchor my second pairing with a strong, two-way #3 in Ebbie Goodfellow.
