ATD Chat Thread XX

So, I had something of a depression-driven outburst earlier. (The last 2 days have been bad.) I edited it to apologize for it, but I'm afraid that won't be seen as well as an apology here would be, so I want to apologize here as well. You guys deserve better than you've been getting from me in the last few days.

I have no idea what this is about, but sometimes it's healthy to just let it out, man.

Anyway, no harm done. Take care of yourself.

Thanks, guys. I've kind of had a rough week, and I let it spill over. I shouldn't get frustrated about stuff like this. I've still got a lot to learn, and I need to keep that in sight in the proper way.

I chatgpt'd "What would happen if you put a nail through a typhoon on the moon?"

And the result after less than a second was staggering.

Imagine a single AI program given the directive to eradicate part or all of humanity - there are recalcitrant nihilistic sorts. It only takes one human to get this ball rolling.

Forget "nuclear codes" - Do you think AI couldn't source the data from emails and computer hacks and phone calls and lip-reading surveillance cameras?

The rest of this century will be interesting... there seems to be an inevitable FU to humanity sentiment... let us hope not 'til at least the 22nd century. (What alternative could there be to the developmental arc of AI technology?)

It will only take one person eventually.

It can be dodgy to bet on sports overseas.

You meet a guy named "Kim" who sits 14 hours a day at the desk of a little-used Internet cafe/soda and snack shop.

You put $50 (50,000 Korean won - close enough) on "Journalism" to place, because you always bet to place, to not lose a photofinish. The guy doesn't get "place", and even though you say the Korean word for second he shakes his head, so you go "win".. in the Kentucky Derby. And he finishes 2nd. Then the Preakness comes and you wanna place Journalism again, but don't wanna another hassle, so impulsively "win' Sandman, which ended up 3rd....

So instead of cashing in on two second place Journaliam bets intended, you get squat and thank your lucky stars that the triple crown is the only event you put money on!

Zero Cups to show for it yet, but this has been a highly impressive stretch for a very good coach.

OV has been out of the fisrt round twice in his career I think they said? Played defense for one Cup run and passed the puck a total of 5 times his entire career lol. Can't hold Beliveau's jock careerwise.

The Capitals made the playoffs 16 times during Ovechkin's career, and went 8-8 in the first round. That's somewhat disappointing given that Washington finished with more points in the regular season in 12 out of those 16 series, but not terrible.

What really looks bad is the team's 1-7 record in second round series. They finished with more points than their opponent (in the regular season) in 6 of those 8 series, so that's quite a poor outcome.

Overall, if we assume that the team with the higher seeding in the regular season was the favourite to win the series (an oversimplification, of course), Washington should have gone something like 18-6 in the first two rounds. (A better way to do the analysis would be to calculate the expected wins/losses for each series - that would have a flatter outcome, something like 15-9). In reality, they went 9-15. Regardless, the Capitals clearly underachieved in the playoffs over the past 20 years. (But - and this is important - we need to do a deeper dive, rather than ascribe all of this to Ovechkin. He certainly cost the Capitals some series with no-show performances, but there were also quite a few series that they lost, despite him playing excellent hockey).

Bound to happen when he repeatedly ran into prime Crosby and the Pens....they just had the Caps' number.

Those Pens could fly. I still vividly remember how bad they were before Sullivan took over- sludge hockey. Then all of a sudden they were the late 70s Habs playing firewagon hockey and winning. Was fun to watch even if they constantly beat my team. Not sure how often that happens if you just change the system and all of a sudden a team is great (helps to have 2 all-time greats up the middle...).

In the annals of hockey, a tale unfolds,
Of two fierce teams, with ambitions bold.

From Edmonton's ice to Florida's sun,
A rivalry ignited, battles begun.

The Oilers, rich with legacy's glow,
Chasing a Cup since decades ago.

Led by McDavid, swift and keen,
A captain's quest, a nation's dream.

The Panthers, hungry, eyes on the prize,
In '24, they reached the skies.

A 3-0 lead, then tension grew,
Oilers surged, the series anew.

Game Seven's clash, a final fight,
Florida triumphed, a historic night.

Their first Cup raised, joy unconfined,
McDavid's brilliance, yet victory declined.

Now in '25, the stage resets,
Both teams driven, no regrets.

Panthers seek a dynasty's claim,
Oilers aim to reignite their flame.

From Canada's pride to Florida's flair,
A rivalry intense, beyond compare.

In this saga of ice and fire,
Legends are forged, lifting us higher.

So let the puck drop, the battle commence,
In this playoff tale, immense.

Oilers and Panthers, destiny's call,
In the heart of the game, they give their all.
