The polls are interesting and a historical record, but there's clearly some massive skewing around. We have enough years of data now to point to. Lots of veterans post peak. Lots of reputation votes. Lots of breakout seasons getting ignored. Lots of emphasis on playoff success. A few major players get disregarded (Draisaitl).

We should still consider them, but they're a data point and only part of the equation.

Players definitely have some blinders on for guys who were elite years past. Crosby gets lots of love. Price got lots of love post peak. Weber got lots of love post peak.

The votes are done at AGMs, which tend to be quite hectic. Are guys rushed or asked in front of other players?

Vassy is there based on reputation alone. Shesterkin has been very average for the past two seasons.

I think Hellebuyck is just fine being third in that poll with now his third Vezina now and likely Hart Trophy.
Vasi is a likely Vezina finalist and postseason AS this season - wouldn't say it's reputation alone.

But they also clearly are valuing postseason a bit, where Helly has at best an incomplete if not disappointing record.

Pretty impressive the respect Sid garners at 37.

20 years later, he still takes more categories than any other player in the annual NHLPA poll.

No scandals, no drama, just legendary consistency and the most complete winner in the hockey world over the last 2 decades when you factor in the international stage.

I truly don't understand how any true hockey fan, especially Canadian doesn't hold him in the highest regard by this point in time. Even if you don't "like" him or the Penguins, be it true anti-fandom. The man has represented the sport of hockey in the vein of Beliveau, with the largest target on his back since he was 16 years old.

Not sure what surprises me more.....Hellebuyck placing 3rd, or Saros in 5th.

Guess players truly are a fickle bunch.

Hutson reminds me of myself in my dreams where I combine Matthew Le Tissier's art house type of goals, Bergkamp's first touch, and Michael Laudrups's calm centre field demeanour.

I'm told that if a recently rebuilt Canadian team gives a favoured Caps team a better than expected run in the first round, it'll be nothing but unparalleled success after that, so I'm pulling for ya.

No need to worry, the Caps are playing some of the worst hockey in the league and are overrun with injuries to some of their most important players. I'm stunned that more people aren't picking Montreal, I genuinely think they'll pull off the upset...

I've never seen anything like this, on paper Washington is a heavy favorite and every prediction I've seen has them losing.

I mean we all know that if we want to have a perfect bracket we've got to successfully call one or two upsets, but everybody is calling this one.

In all honesty, I'm not feeling all that confident. If anything, just making it this year is a big win for Habs fans. It means the rebuild is working and we're on the right track. Winning a playoff series? Not sure they're quite there yet.

I'm expecting the Caps to target Hutson physically. He's so damn slippery, but NHL playoff hockey is a completely different animal. So we'll see how much time and space he has out there to generate offense.

Any chance of an upset comes down to the play of the Suzuki line. He's taken a massive step forward this year and has been looking like a top-10 C since the Four Nations.

Demidov being a legitimate offensive weapon would go a long way, because secondary scoring may be a problem.

There’s reason for hope but our defense turns the puck over too much and gives up too many rush chances and the Caps are 3rd best off the rush and forecheck/cycle as good as anyone. Also the Strome line even if Potras is hurt is deadly. And Logan Thompson is skating again. Habs have a couple wildcards (Demidov) and the Caps never faced us at our best and last game vs WAS we had like 5 missed breakaways. I was there tho and saw all our turnovers the caps buried. I’m just happy our kids get to play playoff games.

If Demidov is as good as I think, he won't be just a secondary scorer for you.

Can 1st round pick centers Strome & McMichael extend their career best seasons?

The wingers and d are solid.

Caps in 6 games. $50 on it.

Kind of wild Kucherov is this good as a late 2d round pick in this era of scouting. You look at top forwards in the league in any given season and it's almost entirely full top top 5 picks. Other than Benn, the Art Ross is almost exclusively 1st and 2nd overall picks.

McMichael's a LW.

Logan Thompson appears to be getting the start tonight, which is nice for us. I'm not huge on him but he's certainly better than any of the dudes they've put between the pipes the past two weeks, Charlie Lindgren include.

The absences of Protas and Fehervary will be felt...
