Ottawa Citizen, March 26, 1953

In the opinion of many selectors [Gordie Howe] is greater than Howie Morenz, the Montreal Canadiens center who three years ago was voted the greatest of the half century.

"He can do everything in super-star fashion" said Red Burnett of the Toronto Daily Star. "He is a better all-around player than Morenz."

Dana Mozley of the New York Daily News: "He does everything well; most things better than anyone. He is as good as Morenz. "

Lou Walter, Detroit Times "He can do more things, and magnificently than any other player in the game, perhaps in history. Morenz was a thrilling offensive star, but Howe is great both ways."

Toronto, New York and Detroit sources think the 24 year old prairie kid is already greater than the Montreal legendary Morenz, as then published in Ottawa.

It tracks. Ballsy would've been to publish it in Montreal. Regional rivalries played itself out in the media blatantly.

Dom L:
me and my friends did a chaos draft last night: NFL, NHL, NBA all at the same time
here's how it went

for those wondering about the scoring, here's how the projected top 51 came out
the "pro-rating" was to create scoring balance in the three leagues (ie, bringing jokic down from 4K points to 400) + make injuries a non-factor

The Scotty Bowman trophy SHOULD be coach of the year.

The NHLPA best player award was aptly re-named the Ted Lindsay.

The Rocket Richard should remain given the aura of 50, and trailblazing.

I have always thought there should be a Gretzky award: 1. For assists; or 2. For passing (only the top 5 assists candidates are eligible; voted on independent of position).

I get so damn bored of the "why don't we have a Bobby Orr trophy" missives. It doesn't ever seem to solve an actual problem that exists. If you want to find out whose the all time king of whatever the award is for, look at the list and find out who won 7 or 8 of them, it's not difficult.

That said, honoring the guy who made big advances in scouting, and brought over Salming and Hammarstrom to North America, is consistent with the renaming of the Lindsay Award - it's a guy who pushed the whole community forward and made their whole vocation better. What Pollock accomplished, there's another award for that. You can drink out of it and it's been kicked into a canal. You know the one. And I'm open to arguments to counter this, but in some ways all Pollock did was win. And he often did significant long-term damage to the teams he traded with, or in the case of the Islanders and Potvin, tried to. That's not a strike against him as a manager - quite the opposite - but again, he gets the big silver one for that. And then the team was very quickly in worse shape when he walked out the door. I respect Pollock immensely, but right now I just don't think his greatness is the type of greatness that an award renaming is intended to highlight.

Adams is another matter, I wouldn't be surprised to see that one renamed at some point after someone worthy dies.

Selke could have been even greater if he decided to poach Howe, which he could have. They would have won the next 15 Cups. But he played the noce guy.

Nikita Kucherov just locked up his 3rd Art Ross Trophy and second in a row.

It may be an uncomfortable conversation to have as there are many greats who have big time supporters on this forum..the obvious candidates being Makarov, Kharlamov, Fetisov, Ovechkin etc..but he has to be in the conversation for the greatest Russian of all-time by now..right?
