ATD Chat Thread XX

Ottawa Citizen, March 26, 1953

In the opinion of many selectors [Gordie Howe] is greater than Howie Morenz, the Montreal Canadiens center who three years ago was voted the greatest of the half century.

"He can do everything in super-star fashion" said Red Burnett of the Toronto Daily Star. "He is a better all-around player than Morenz."

Dana Mozley of the New York Daily News: "He does everything well; most things better than anyone. He is as good as Morenz. "

Lou Walter, Detroit Times "He can do more things, and magnificently than any other player in the game, perhaps in history. Morenz was a thrilling offensive star, but Howe is great both ways."

Toronto, New York and Detroit sources think the 24 year old prairie kid is already greater than the Montreal legendary Morenz, as then published in Ottawa.

It tracks. Ballsy would've been to publish it in Montreal. Regional rivalries played itself out in the media blatantly.

Dom L:
me and my friends did a chaos draft last night: NFL, NHL, NBA all at the same time
here's how it went

for those wondering about the scoring, here's how the projected top 51 came out
the "pro-rating" was to create scoring balance in the three leagues (ie, bringing jokic down from 4K points to 400) + make injuries a non-factor

The Scotty Bowman trophy SHOULD be coach of the year.

The NHLPA best player award was aptly re-named the Ted Lindsay.

The Rocket Richard should remain given the aura of 50, and trailblazing.

I have always thought there should be a Gretzky award: 1. For assists; or 2. For passing (only the top 5 assists candidates are eligible; voted on independent of position).

I get so damn bored of the "why don't we have a Bobby Orr trophy" missives. It doesn't ever seem to solve an actual problem that exists. If you want to find out whose the all time king of whatever the award is for, look at the list and find out who won 7 or 8 of them, it's not difficult.

That said, honoring the guy who made big advances in scouting, and brought over Salming and Hammarstrom to North America, is consistent with the renaming of the Lindsay Award - it's a guy who pushed the whole community forward and made their whole vocation better. What Pollock accomplished, there's another award for that. You can drink out of it and it's been kicked into a canal. You know the one. And I'm open to arguments to counter this, but in some ways all Pollock did was win. And he often did significant long-term damage to the teams he traded with, or in the case of the Islanders and Potvin, tried to. That's not a strike against him as a manager - quite the opposite - but again, he gets the big silver one for that. And then the team was very quickly in worse shape when he walked out the door. I respect Pollock immensely, but right now I just don't think his greatness is the type of greatness that an award renaming is intended to highlight.

Adams is another matter, I wouldn't be surprised to see that one renamed at some point after someone worthy dies.

Selke could have been even greater if he decided to poach Howe, which he could have. They would have won the next 15 Cups. But he played the noce guy.

Nikita Kucherov just locked up his 3rd Art Ross Trophy and second in a row.

It may be an uncomfortable conversation to have as there are many greats who have big time supporters on this forum..the obvious candidates being Makarov, Kharlamov, Fetisov, Ovechkin etc..but he has to be in the conversation for the greatest Russian of all-time by now..right?

In terms of best Russian NHL play, certainly.

The Soviet Green Unit was something else.

My team just gets better and better with each passing game.

Also, are we ever going to get things going with regular season voting? It seems interest in dying in ATD at the moment.

I wish I had more time to get the ATD moving but work and life outside of work has been very hectic (nothing bad, just busy). My parents are in the process of selling their home of 44 years, and the 33 acres it sits on, so I've been spending a good bit of my off time assisting them with the physical labor part of it, considering they're both in their late 70's now. My dad is having a hard time with the eventual move later this year, but it's for the best. It's rural and just too much for them to handle at this stage of their lives. Beyond that, still getting settled into the new job, though I'm not far off feeling comfortable so I will hopefully have a little bit of time during the day to log on more, in a few weeks/month.

How would everyone feel if we start regular season voting next Monday?

Also, I feel vindicated bumping Kucherov the previous 2 years in the ATD. He's just an offensive force, brilliant player, different from someone like McDavid, but more or less just as effective. And sadly, he'll get passed over for the Hart once again it seems. Hedman is a HOF defender certainly, but Kuch is the engine and most important player for Tampa.

I want to apologize for the assassinations falling off. I'd been intending to do more, but I've been sick for the better part of the week, and it's kinda gotten in the way.

Ok, so it appears that BB picked a 4th line of Bob Davidson*, Dale Hawerchuk and Bobby Bauer but didn't list it, and took Allan Cameron and Frank Patrick as his last 2 defensemen, though only listed Patrick (his 7th pick at that position). He needs at least one extra forward, and another extra or assistant coach, or arena for that matter. I assume he intends Davidson to kill penalties, and that Firsov is supposed to take faceoffs on that unit.

I'm looking to see if some suitable options are available, let me know if anyone has any problems with this.

We're also looking for a pick from @rmartin65

* Earlier in the draft I casually commented that Davidson would likely not be picked, though I do think he's a worthy addition, and there are probably 40 players with about the same ATD value who did or didn't get picked and would have been good as a 4th LW. This completes a comparison I made between the most famous line built around Syl Apps, and Mike Modano respectively. My perception is that Apps sometimes gets dinged as having a linemate do the hard defensive work for him, while Modano's defensive reputation improved dramatically while playing on an almost identical line. Apps and Modano are both big bodies who move with a speed and grace that's uncommon for their size, and were balanced attackers who did the bulk of the puck-carrying. On their right, they had players who had a (maybe overstated, but often deserved) reputation for being slow, lazy skaters, but were snipers with deadly accurate shots, in Drillon and Hull. And then on their left, they had pure defensive shadow types who were just good enough with the puck to play on a top line, in Davidson and Lehtinen. I don't have a conclusion for this, but it's kind of funny that I inherited this player.

While scanning the list, why in the world is William Nylander listed as a C only? For the last 3 years, the Leafs have started training camp saying "hm, yet another birthday candle for slow old Tavares, would be sure nice if we could have another top six centre and if William could....oh no he can't" and it doesn't even make it past week one.
He's a right wing.

Hellebuyck hasn't really done as well in these polls as I think hockey fans would have him.

This is the only year so far that he's finished top-3 for best goalie.

Vassy is there based on reputation alone. Shesterkin has been very average for the past two seasons.

I think Hellebuyck is just fine being third in that poll with now his third Vezina now and likely Hart Trophy.
