ATD Chat Thread XX

Test.

Tinyzombies made the last pick at 449 in round 23. Claude would be next up but I can't tag anyone without getting a server error.

We should probably just wait until Monday of next week to even think about resuming with everything going on.

Test.

Okay, so either tagging or quoting is messed up still. Maybe it's tagging since IE had a problem with that too. But yeah, I was going to say Claude too, so I'm thinking that must be right since we're both thinking it.

I can't complain since I've been posting here since 2005 (without paying a cent). The main frustration is tables haven't worked properly since the data migration in January.

Here's what it shows when I try to post a small, simple table:

Many of my old threads (with statistical data - ie Hart and Norris trophy voting, scoring stats, etc) are virtually unreadable now. And it's not just a matter of going back and editing them, since (like above) even new tables aren't posting properly.

It's Saturday, and i'm re-living moments and guys I've loved through vids i revisit from time to time, for pleasure (hence 10+ times in all):

These are 1st-rate tribute vids. Addictive.

Kesler & Luongo put us on the cusp:

I admit i re-visit this a morn in a while:

It really is a shame to see so much great work being pissed away by these updates. I fully expect it'll all be gone at some point down the line.

Some data was lost in (I think) 2017. Since then, I've saved copies of any tables or data that I've posted. So it's all salvageable - just hoping that I don't need to go back and manually update dozens of threads. (Even if I had time to do that now, which I don't, I couldn't do it because any tables I try to post don't save properly).

I really hope not too much was lost with this forum f***up. Made an immediate observation with my profile details and getting logged back in. My post count seems off by a bit and my "likes" dropped by about 2K. Not that "likes" matter to me one bit, but it's still an important detail if that means some threads and posts were potentially lost forever. Hopefully that's not the case.

Tables and such are probably messed up. Hopefully we can get those back. A lot of hard work and research went into many projects on this forum over the years and it would be a damn shame to lose anything of importance.

I had similar trouble when trying to add tables for my players’ estimated minutes to my roster post. At first I didn’t have borders/gridlines for the tables in excel, and once I added those they pasted correctly.

Made the goalie project sticky, and the pre-merger project unstickied, as that's not the most recent project. Goalie project is now listed in the "top players of all time" master thread, which is itself stickied.

Kucherov is a lock for top 3 in points this year. It would be his 5th time. Amongst active players top 3.

McDavid- 8 (1,1,1,1,1,2,2,3)
Crosby - 8 (1,1,2,3,3,3,3,3)
Kucherov - 5 (1,1,3,3,x)
Ovechkin - 5 (1,2,3,3,3)

These are the only active players to do it 5 or more times. Draisaitl at 4. A few more at 3 (Malkin, Kane). MacKinnon is the only other active player with a shot, but this is just his second season.

If you go back a generation Jagr was the only one to do it (7x). Some big names like Sakic, Yzerman, Selanne, and Forsberg didn't quite make it. Post Lafleur/Dionne Gretzky and Lemieux are the only others to join.

7 players across 55 birth years (1951-2006). Kucherov in some pretty rarified company.

Surprised Drai's only at 4 after this season

Found an early newspaper about Wayne Gretzky. He was only 11 years old

Ottawa Citizen · ‎Apr 21, 1972
NHL scouts comparing him to the Boston Bruin's Bobby Orr. Scout Brent Madill makes the same comparison" "Orr played Junior A at 13 and I would say that Wayne's ability now is about the same as his then. And Wayne's not working at it. It comes naturally."

Here's the first ever mention of Gretzky in a published hockey book. 1972's "The Death of Hockey" by Bruce Kidd & John MacFarlane.

Then, in 1975 Brian McFarlane included a Gretzky piece in his book "Brian McFarlane's 1975 Hockey Annual." It was written a few years earlier. This was a photo I had on my phone from an old social media post I had made on Todd Denault's hockey books facebook group a few years back. I'm not in my library right now but I'll try to remember to take a photo of the full article later.

If Kucherov manages to win the Art Ross, the only wingers with more would be Howe (6) and Jagr (5).

Crosby breaks a Gretzky record recently and it wouldn't surprise me to see Ovechkin pass him in the goals department in the final tilt of the year, against, none other, than Crosby and Pittsburgh. I think it would be fitting and will roundly applaud 8 for a monumental achievement many thought couldn't be done, myself included.

Makar is on a top 10 (or better) defenseman all time pace now. Still very early though.

I miss some of the physicality of my youth, but from a historical standpoint, we've been pretty blessed w/talent in the past 2 decades.

Ten all-time leaders in games spent as an NHL GM, through the end of this season...

Poile 3077
Lamoriello 2923
Sather 2700
Sinden 2234
Holland 2016
Fletcher 2055
Adams 1994
Rutherford 1984
Francis 1899
C Patrick 1710

If these were adjusted for length of schedule, Francis would be up there with Sinden, and Adams would practically lap the field.

This will Makar's fifth year in a row placing top 3 in Norris voting. The only players to do that 5+ years in a row.

Orr - 9x
Bourque- x7
Lidstrom- x6
Pilote - x6
Park - x5
Potvin- x5
Harvey - x5
Robinson - x5
Hedman - x5
Makar - x5

5 years in a row top 3 is fairly arbitrary, but I think helps demonstrate the all time run he's on.

So, all-time drafting Makar the 64th dman, in the 9th round this year (a couple of rounds higher than before), ... is just.

A 7-year career stretch is often used to define ATD greatness. Yet when 5 of 6 career years are so good, plus a Conn Smythe postseason, that 7th season could be a zero due to injury or whatever, and still the value is there.

Makar is now a solid 2nd pairing ATDer.
All time, he may be a top pairing by year 10.
Or not. Injuries or off-ice issues could surface. Time will tell.
