I notice that Auston Matthews is a finalist for the Selke and the Lady Byng.

Only three players have won both in the same year:
  • Francis in '95
  • Datsyuk in '08
  • Kopitar in '16
Matthews could become the 4th, and the first American.

Note: O'Reilly & Barkov have won each once, but in different seasons.

Note2: Datsyuk & Kopitar have not only been the most gentlemanly player while at the same time being the best defensive forward (an honor Frank Nighbor would have won multiple times if the Selke existed back then)... but also: Datsyuk & Kopitar have won each award again, but in different seasons.

McDavid's most recent goal continues to show how great he is!

He might end up on the Jagr, Crosby tier.

He is certainly gonna be inducted and above Turgeon and the Sedins.

Ceiling talk: Can McDavid surpass Lemieux?
... dang open q

Omg... the best, funniest new word in years (has legs) was spawned on Saturday:

Tsiddahn!

Us teachers will use that endlessly!

Digging through some old newspapers, it's crazy how early women's hockey starts.

I have reference to a game in Regina in 1896!
That was something that struck me too while digging through the scans. I don’t have the exact year, but I vividly recall a game report from the late (?) 1890s where one player was compared to Wendy Young.

It looks like I remembered the date incorrectly, actually, the game report was from 31 January 1900 (close enough, right?)-

"Miss Jessie Gilmour, who captained the Sandy Hill team was a tower of strength at cover point and her brilliant rushes down the ice reminded one of Mike Grant, of the Victorias, or Weldy Young, and were one of the features of the match"

You might be able to point me in the right direction.

I can find tons of Manitoba Hockey Association stuff 1895-1910. And tons of references to hockey in Regina in the same time period. But nothing to an actual named league.

Have you seen any pre 1910 Saskatchewan league stuff? It's weird how much hockey there is without a formalized league.

Sorry, I haven’t. Not that I can remember, at least. I haven’t even made my way through the MHA yet, though it is on my list.

I’m sure there must have been a league, though… right? A quick check in Wiki makes mention of a Saskatchewan Amateur Hockey Association being founded in 1906, but that appears to be it.

I have two 10-year cats yet have rescused a 2-3 week old abandoned kitten (her mom has been a street cat near the English academy for 2 years at least, limps, has a crooked tail and has trouble eating (jaw injury?); she abandoned one kitten and carries around the other (the seafood restauranteur across the street buys expensive wet cat food for her).

I took the kitten to the vet, it got its shots for a viral infection of the eyes (two shots, dunno the 2nd), and like a baby i have to feed it every couple of hours, first with a syringe, then a mini-baby bottle. It opened its eyes, is active, needs constant bodily contact.

You can't save all, but you can save some. At least one.

My two angora cats are PISSED but, after 10 years of pampering, their meows behind a few hours of bedroom confinement falls on deaf ears.

I still feed an orange 6-month old male street cat who lets me sit next to him but not touch him, and i feed a black & white very friendly leg-rubbing cat who either has been abandoned or simply is usually let outside, though how ravenous she was in February makes me suspect the former. She has had two kittens, which she has broughr by the house thrice, though one cowers away and the other hisses despite i petting the mom and feeding them wet and dry food.

Life is always worth it.
Make a difference, of some sorts, hopefully helpful.

Update: the kitten was like about 2 weeks old, abandoned, took to a vet and got injections, eyes opened last Wednesday ("Hi Shadow" i said, high school girls choosing the name Friday night). Saturday morn the woman, who runs the restaurant across the street that saved the cat, escorted me to a 'good' vet who put on an overly-tight IV (the wrapping i litterally could not cut off until 2 days later - a limp persists) and the IV didn't work!

To recap: Tuesday a very young abandoned kitten after days of meowing in a yard was rescued by the Korean (i'm in South Korea) restauranteur nearby who knows i have two 10-year-old sibling cats (10 years previously, i received a knock on my door in 2014 and my past employer had two kittens in her hand and asked me to choose one, her friend's cat had had a litter and she knew i loved cats - i said i needed until Monday to decide, and of course didn't Sophie's choice it, i took her and him). That Tuesday night my employer fed it milk from a mini-bottle from my shoulder (his female high school class of three at the academy had run to a supermarket two blocks away to get "pet milk" for puppies and kittens. Shadow ate well.

The next day i took the kitty to a vet, it got two shots, and stopped eating for three days! The new vet on Saturday put an IV in - ineffective - and Sunday morning, after 24 hours of nothing getting better i took out the iv and fed the kitty wet food, which it ate ravenously!

So, a vet on Wednesday, and another vet on Saturday "treated" the kitty and it stopped getting food both times, cost nearly 500 dollars, and when on Monday i returned to the vet (not open since 1pm Saturday) to get the overly tightly wrapped iv bandage taken off - my scissors couldnt do it; the cat has limped on that paw since the damage the iv bandage caused - incompetence? Or standard operating procedure?).

The kitten is eating and pooping (once big, twice small, enlarged tummy hopefully isnt some infected/worm problem). It isn't getting bigger. It is playing and grooming. It is meowing less loudly however (a sign of lack of vigor?).

Next Monday a 30-something apartment-dwelling (to keep the kitty inside; important) Korean woman wants to adopt it.

I hope she isn't hoping for "Hello Kitty" enjoyment only. A cat, especially a young fragile kitty, needs nurturing, attention, and consideration (12 hours away is neglect).
